Default CRV Tie Rods

I just took my 1998 Honda CRV in for a front end brake job. The repair person told me that the car has loose tie rods. When I asked for a repair estimate I was told that if it's the "outer" tie rods it would run around $270. If, however, there's a problem with the "inner" tie rods they would have to replace the entire rack and pinion unit, at a cost of $1000 PLUS the cost for the "outer" rods! My question: Are these fees reasonable? Also: Do they REALLY have to replace the entire rack and pinion unit in order to repair/replace the inner tie rods? Thanks for any help, advice or sympathy.

Out of curiosity, had you noticed any problems with the steering or anything at all that would make you think that you have any problems with the steering? A lot of places like to make stuff up for fun and profit.

Default CRV Tie Rods

The only thing out of the ordinary is it seems like the tires are wearing out fairly fast on the front (I DO rotate them every 5-8K miles) and I've had to do two allingments in the past 60k miles. I will get a 2nd opinion before doing any repair, but I've had pretty good luck with this particular repair facility in the past. Thanks for your interest.

If you can't keep the front end aligned it might be the tie rods then. As for the cost of the job, the price sounds about right. Tie rods don't cost that much and I doubt they take long to repair, so $270 seems reasonable. Messing with the steering rack on most front wheel drive based cars is a major pain, so again, the price isn't too surprising.

Based on your comment about tie wear, the tie rods are a reasonable choice. The comment on the steering rack causes me concern however. By inner tie rods I'm assuming they mean the steering rack ends. I've never heard of these needing replacing and I've had several high mileage hondas including my current 1998 CRV with 195k. In fact, I think that CRV inner steering rack ends can be tightened but, even if they can't, my service manual shows that they can be removed from the steering rack and replaced. I can't understand why they are talking about having to replace the steering rack (it can also be adjusted for looseness). Do you have an unusually high number of miles and/or do a lot of rough road driving? If not, I'd definitely get a second opinion.

I have 107K miles, orig owner, never aligned, on 2nd set of tires, only 1/2 ware on tires currently, if you like to punish curbs - them maybe you need help but if you drive reasonably - your getting told a line.

I had my steering rack replaced in my 97 Accord. It cost $900.00
