Angry brake/caliper problems: ripped off?

Hi all
wife's honda CRV, 2003. March this year the following work at dealer.
complaint: shudder above 45
Dealer diagnoses: r/front caliper stuck, cause r/front rotor to get hot and warped. recommend to replace r/front caliper and both front rotors.
They also checked r/rear caliper. Said it was stuck too. They recommended to replace both rear calipers as well.

I agreed. dealer replaced front right, and both rear brake calipers too. (Yes I am not mechanical. Yes we are both making professional incomes. Yes I am a sucker to be fleeced by dealers)

Last friday, 9/28, (6 months and ~3000 miles later) bad noise r/rear. Metal on metal brake situation. Under warranty from prior repair. Go to dealer. Wants to replace r/r caliper both rotors, pads etc. Warranty covers only cost of one replacement r/r caliper, no labor no other parts. I argue. They agree to throw in one rotor for free as well as it was damaged by the caliper "going bad". (Service manager, when pressed, says he has no idea why this happened, has "never seen caliper failure after 3000 miles).

I find this forum and read things like "calibers should be good for 30 years"; "its the slider pins that need yearly maintenance in snow belt (Honda Technical bulletin referenced)"; etc....So I'm pretty sure the first repair probably wasn't necessary. And here I am getting ready to do the rear brakes again with the same people because of a nominal warranty break that ain't much.

I'm a tad irritated (understatement for PG-13 purposes).

Thoughts? (other than a sucker is born every minute?)

I own my V. I change my parts, the Brakes are by fare very easy to do, and respect your decision?

calibers go bad, and I lost mine a good 100 plus miles from home. They are very easy to change out. So are the brakes.

caliber will fail if the job was not done correctly and it sounds like he placed a Seal kit in? vs a whole caliber. You can ask the shop what exactly will you be doing? and I like a list......

My caliber cost me 40.00 or so per from rockauto.com
my brake pad 40.00 a rotor 67.00 per $250.00 and an hours labor. Possiably you can find a local person that will do the job better.

watch the video and you'll have some fighting ground when the guy says well we need to do this and that Lol

It might be worth complaining to Honda Corporate about it, although they might not do anything.
The contact information is in the back of your Owners Manual.

I'd also find a different Honda dealer, if that's an option for you.

I'll be talking with the service manager tomorrow morning early before I authorize them to do any work -- they are waiting for a part anyway.

the 1st brake job cost me $1300+ March 30th, 2012, six months ago.

I'll let you know how many people are going to be receiving letters.

The problem is that they probably didn't service your 'stuck slider pins' when they did the original work.

SEARCH 'stuck slider pins' to see dozens of cases where it lead to multiple trips to the shop for no justifiable reason. We've seen reports of 'stuck slider pins' on HONDAS that were virtually new, so the dealer should have diagnosed your problem, not just patched up the outward symptoms.

You would think. B/c tehy [probably went the cheap route by doing a seal exchange, not the caliber only. when they could have changed the whole caliber and all.

if they did he whole caliber and all, no need to lube what was lubed from factory?

Default resolved, thanks to all

I just wanted to thank all who responded. The dealer did the right thing, replacing not just the part that went bad under warranty, but all the affected parts, etc, waived the labor, etc. Even though, arguably, the caliper failing (and it did fail in that the slider pins could not be moved even with clamp pressure) after only 3000 miles was not their fault, they ate the cost of the rework.

On the other hand, it was quite clear that when they do brake maintenance, if they see an opportunity to sell calipers, they take it as a more profitable transaction if the customer is a) willing or b) not unaware of alternatives.

I will be having my wife's brakes' sliders maintained twice a year, spring and fall from now on.
