Default 15% Oil Life Left: What does that mean?

On August 12, 2010 (last year) I had the oil changed on my daughter's 2010 CRV with 4628 miles on the odometer. The car was 10 months old and the "15% oil life" light was on. Now the car has 11,025 miles (July 2, 2011) but I'd like to wait until August 1, 2011 to get it changed along with a PA state inspection (the first day the car can be inspected) and new tires for daughter to take back to college about August 15th. The car won't be back home until she graduates in May. My point is to try to time everything so that she won't need any service while away (her college is 700 miles away).

Sp the "15% Oil Life" light is on again now. Will it make it until August 1st or 2nd? Does the computer work on a straight 1 year cycle since the mileage is low (about 6500 miles since the last change, as per the above numbers)? This obviously is not a huge deal but I am just wondering.

I highly recommend you do a search on here as this topic has been talked about a zillion times, thus many may not respond to it if you do a search for oil life indicator, you will find many pages and many places where they explain how it works.

I don't want a whole discussion about whether the MM is OK to follow or not. Just wondering if it will not go to zero, from the current 15%, in less than a month.

What type oil is in there now? If it's a synth/synth blend you could probably push it. But, as stated in the last post, it really depends on how, and how much it will be driven. You could always let her use your car if she's planning a long trip. I wish her well in her last year of college.

From the description of mileage she has done in the past, it should be fine for another month or so. If the indicator does got to zero percent left - it isn't like any harm will come to the engine. You can bet that Honda's engineers accounted for situations like what you describe.

Thanks BigIslandV. That's sorta what I thought. She'll put on 400-500 miles max.

I believe at 15% it is a reminder that you are due for a change soon, you need to change it before it hits 0 ! That being said with another 500 odd miles you may hit 5% which is ok. You need to change it when you are at 0 !

Just make sure the oil level is right, and you'll be fine to drive for another month.

I am also a little more than curious about this topic and I posted the following on another site just before this one but would also like some replies from the good folks here in this site.

Quote:
My instrument cluster is in km so I would like to know how many km the CRV has gone when it hits 15% and 10 and 5 and 0 on the dash where I have heard a orange "wrench ?" appears.

Because I change oil and filter every 5000 km on this vehicle and on many others I have owned previously to this one I have never seen a service warning light appear on the instrument cluster. , I have no idea how many km have been traveled at those lower numbers. I have been changing mine every time the reminder gets to 50% and have been assuming that is about 5 thousand , km .

I know many change oil at 5 K miles so my change interval is probably considerably less " if " 50 % means 5K km.

The only thing I can find in my manual is a chart of percentages all the way from 100 down to 0 that proclaims oil life but not number of kilometers at the various stages..

If anyone would like to show how many miles are driven instead of kilometers when it hits 15% and 10 and 5 and 0 that would also be of help because I can do the conversion on that .
