Default Hey, I want our newer V to work like the old one . . . .

We had a '97, and now we have a '98. Both are automatics.

On the '97, when you took your foot off the gas, you FELT some engine braking, right away.

Example: At highway speed we only had to release the gas 1/8th mile from our turn-off. The older V would slow down PRONTO.

On the '98, you almost can't tell you took your foot off the pedal. Sure it slows down, but the rate was DRAMATIC on the '97. Both vehicles had the same idle speed / horsepower / everything. Both had fresh Honda z1 in the trannies. No mods, both were AWD with fresh Dual Pump Fluid, etc, etc.

Any explanations ? Guesses ? ? We actually liked the old one better

Opinion here...Probably has to do with emission and CAFE standards.

I did some research, including looking in the Service Manual. It's actually the Power Control Module (PCM) that probably needs to be reset. The PCM controls the transmission shift points and Grade Logic. The Electronic Control Module (ECM, not ECU...my bad) is also reset at the same time, so it's a minor difference. This also clears all check engine light codes.

1. Begin with a cold engine and all accessories (radio, A/C, fan, lights, etc) turned off (note: Canadian versions: set the parking brake to prevent DRLs from coming on)
2. Remove the "BACK UP (RADIO) (7.5A)" fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds. The under-hood fuse/relay box is good sized plastic box to the left of the battery as you're facing the engine (there's a smaller plastic box in the same area that's the ABS fuse/relay box)
3. Replace the fuse

This actually ends the reset of the ECM and PCM, but you should probably do the engine idle reset steps listed below, too.

4. Get in the CR-V and close the door (so the interior light is off)
5. Start the engine without touching the gas pedal
6. Allow the engine to idle for 10 minutes (you can spend the time reading your owner's manual, but pull it out of the glove box and shut it so the light is out before doing Step 5 )

Reset the clock and radio after the engine has idled for 10 minutes. The idea is to put no extra load on the engine by powering on any accessories.

Resource notes: Steps 1-3 come right from the Honda Service Manual. Steps 4-6 from various "tuner" sites as recommendations for letting the ECM "learn" about upgraded engine and exhaust components.

My "04 EX AT has been doing this since new. I can get closer to the tolls before turning cruise off because it slows down so fast.
