Default Do I need catalytic converter heat shield?

It's rattling and I saw couple of screws are already missing. Can I just remove them?
Thanks.

Go to Home Depot and get two large stainless steel strap clamps, go under the vehicle and strap the heatshields together. I have done this for over 6 years on my 97.

If you do a search, you will find many threads on this topic.

Short answer is no, if yours is strictly a street machine.

I took mine off the 97 about four years ago to get rid of the rattle.
Pondered the strap routine, but decided against it.
No issues to date.

If you off-road, particularly in grasses that might somehow touch it,
probably would be worth the trouble to go the strap route.

IIRC, the heat shield is an attempt to prevent fire when parking over combustibles, like a pile of leaves.

I've removed rusted out shields in the past to do away with rattles as well.

I do take my 97 off road and adding strap clamps are actually easier than trying to get rusted screws etc off to take the shields off. You can do this fix in less than 10 minutes. Keeps the original function of the part, less worries and also no rattles.

If the shield/s are still there just use a clamp or two and keep everything as it was designed to be, very simple.
