Default Towing a popup camper trailer

Purchased a 2004 CRV EX two months ago to drive back and forth to work. I am impressed with the vehicle. Took it to a favorite fishing hole this weekend. We pull a Starcraft Meteor popup behind a Chevy Silverado with a 5.7L engine. The gross trailer weight is 867 pounds. The manual states the CRV can pull 1000lbs. Can a CRV with a family of four pull this trailer?

Actually, the 1,000 lbs is the rating for the 1st Gen (1997-2001) CR-V. The 2nd Gen (2002+) is rated for 1,500 lbs.

Enjoy!

My mistake! Don't know why 1000lbs stuck in my mind.

hold on a sec...

first, there are lots of discussions and posts about what can pull how much at some of the popup specific groups - popupexplorer.com is one.

now for the wet blanket part - your trailer GVW is dry weight and dosn't allow for any load you may have in/on the PU. ie. food, clothes, water in the tank, pots&pans, bikes... you get the picture. Your actual weight adds up fast & is best determined by taking your PU (loaded as you'd use it) over the scales.

Next, your V, anything you put in it (they usually allow one 150 lb person in the GVW) will specify a maximum GVW, that is the tow vehicle, the trailer (as loaded). That number is also very easy to exceed.

Next is tongue weight and axle weight, both are important and easily exceeded.

I know this is likely all stuff you never had to think about before as your PU is quite small to tow with your Silverado - but you need to do some math to make sure you don't: endanger you and your family with an unsafe tow, accelerate wear on your new ride, void your warranty by overloading, or worst of all, give the other guy's lawyer cart blanche to squeeze you dry should you get in an accident when towing overloaded.

I've got a G1 - V and tow my PU (about the same as yours) with my minivan - even then it's just under the numbers.

cheers

I forgot to add this - to see what can happen when you overestimate your towing ability (and for a smile), paste this into your browser and take a look.
I should'nt laugh, but can't help it...

Doug97 is right, and it's a real problem for the 1st Gen CR-V. Lets look at some numbers for a 1st Gen CR-V.

Curb Weight - aprox. 3,300 lbs (that's actually a 2nd Gen EX, the 1st Gen is a little lighter, but I can't put my hands on the actual 1st Gen EX MT weight)
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - 4,165 lbs (from the sticker on the drivers door sill)
max trailer weight - 1,000 lbs (owners manual)
max tongue weight - 110 lbs (owners manual)

So the weight capacity of my 1st Gen CR-V is 4165 - 3300 = 865 lbs.

That's everything I put inside the CR-V and the tongue weight of the loaded trailer. So effectively, I have 755 lbs of weight I can put inside the CR-V. 2 adults + 2 teenagers is going to be close to 600 lbs, which leaves 155 lbs of "stuff" I can put inside the CR-V. Everything else I want to take has to go in the trailer.

With the 1st Gen's trailer weight limit of 1,000 lbs, an 867 lb trailer only leaves me with 133 lbs I can put in the trailer.

So, aside from the 4 people, I can take 155 lbs of cargo in the CR-V and 133 lbs of cargo inside the trailer. How much stuff do you have?

The numbers are better with the 2nd Gen, since the max trailer weight is 1,500 lbs and tongue weight is 150 lbs. That means an extra 500 lbs you can put in your trailer. I am assuming that the difference between curb weight and GVWR are similar for the 2nd Gen.

As long as you keep the amount of gear you take with you to under 700 lbs you should be fine.

(sigh)

I certain that I have a handful of questions that have already been answered in previous threads, so I intend to scour the archives... after I read the owner's manual.

And who said you would never use math after college?

No one I know of, unless your job requires the frequent use of the phrase: "Want fries with that?"

Okay, I'll admit that counting money is math. But the POS (point of sale, not that other 's' word ) computer will even tell them how much change they have to give you.

I even saw one system recently that the screen showed the change graphically. For example, if the change was $2.16 it showed two pictures of a dollar bill, and one picture each of a dime, a nickel, and a penny. All large enough and in full color so that they were easily identifiable.
