Did you check your fuses?
And disconnect the questionable trailer wiring?

Check all of your fuses.
If they are okay, then go back and check your wiring and make sure that you are properly grounded.

Most vehicles have a separate fuse for the tail lights and the brake lights. It would be worth a look. Since the trailer harness wiring is questionable, I would look at that too since there may be a bad connection or a short.

Okay ... my bad. The reason I had trouble finding the proper fuse is because it was labeled "small lights (exterior)". For some reason I didn't think this referred to tail lights but it certainly does. Anyway, fuse replaced and all lights working. A closer check under the trailer did indeed reveal a crossed ground wire. Thanks all.
