Any fixes? New Discs or new discs AND calipers? |

When does this noise become most apparent?

your going to have to remove the wheels and have a look at it first, could be rusty rotors.

Its apparent only when braking until vehicle stops dead. Noise sounds like rotors are warped slightly too. Must need new discs. Could it be the brake calipers too? Can they move and make a noise? Its a 2003 model with 60,000 miles. Brake pads changed once at 48,000. Never had new discs. Last edited by markukcrv; 08-16-2008 at 01:10 PM. |

At only 60,000 miles, you probably need to find a decent shop who will slip your brakes apart and properly diagnose whether you have stuck slider pins, and whether the pads have been wearing evenly. Lubricate all eight pins and put if back together with fresh pads, if needed. Please SEARCH 'slider pins'

no you don't HEAR warped discs BUT the warped disc may be making the calipers move and creak loudly. SOMETHING is making the noise.
I will check the slider pins ..Thanks. I've also bought some new discs anyway. Last edited by markukcrv; 08-18-2008 at 09:25 AM. |

Hi Mark,
I have had problems with noises from the rear - pardon the pun! Not so long ago took ours back to Honda with a ticking/tapping when taking right bends. They did a brake service and changed the diff oil. It seemed a bit better but it returned.. the tapping is present when slowly braking as reported before, which leads me to think at least the discs are warped, and yes I can feel it pulse a bit. The brakes on this CRV are nowhere near as effective as other cars I have owned. At times, I find I have to apply them sharply, as they seem to to either slightly slow the car or need to be pressed hard - no in between. A Peugeot 406 would stop dead in it's tracks if pressed slightly too much. I still get the pronounced tapping when taking a right turn under load. I am not a mechanic but guess either the discs or a dodgy wheel bearing. The car is due a service/MOT soon, so will leave them to look again. It is under warranty for another 18 months. Maybe if I was paying cash they would explore that bit more! Slap my wrist!

You can upgrade the brakes with EBC components. I have just installed EBC Yellow Stuff, and braking is much more effective than before. But, the amount of dust they generate is atrocious. I have to clean the wheels with brake dust cleaner every week. They just turn black.
The pulsing/tapping while turning is probably from a CV joint, rather than brakes. Quote:

Ok replaced rear Discs and all is fine. No noise.
EXCEPT: I now have a handbrake which hardly works. SOoooo..... how can the handbrake be adjusted? It is a dual purpose brake disc with an inner hub for handbrake shoes. How are the shoes adjusted? (there is an inspection rubber grommet in the disc. Is it through this?) |
