Question 2006 CRV SE XM Radio

I have a 2006 CRV Special Edition (from Swindon) which came "XM Ready". It has a 6-CD in dash AM/FM unit which has a button marked "XM/CD" and an antenna on the roof. The owner's manual had directions for the free 90 days but they never worked. I've been told I need a "base unit" for $200 + $100 installation to really activate it. Is this correct or am I missing something?

It's correct. "XM Ready" means your head unit can control the Honda XM receiver, and is prewired for it, but doesn't include the XM reciever or XM antenna unless you pay for it (and the installation).

The black plastic cap on the rear roof is just that...a black plastic cap. It's not the XM antenna.

And I'm not sure if the XM receiver, antenna, and mounting kits are even available anymore. I checked a couple of Honda accessory websites and don't see them listed.

are you looking at 2007 or 2006 manual?
Mine does not say anything about free 90 days service. The car doesn't even have receiver.

Mine had a card in the manual, that said 90 day free trial, and when I asked my dealer about it they said it would cost $400.00 for the free 90 days,

Racoon is right. You need the receiver.

Where did you see it for $200? I'd bite. Install is a moderatley easy DIY.
