Default Fuel Injector Cleaning

Hello.

Everytime I take my '05 V in for an oil change, they try to sell me on getting the fuel injector cleaning service. I've observed them doing this, and they basically plug a can of cleaner up (somehow) and run the cleaner through the fuel injectors (I guess).

Regardless of how mechanically this works, my question is. . .

Should I be getting this service on an '05 V?

BTW, I know these places operate to sell, sell, sell. . .I resist this all the time from them. However, should I be getting this done to help me with fuel economy, smooth ride, and for general maintenance purposes?

If you really are concerned about your injectors getting clogged go to your local Auto Parts store and buy a bottle of Chevron Techron. Follow the directions on the bottle (pour it into a nearly empty gas tank just before you fillup). Do that once a year or so and you'll be fine.

lol I recently had an oil change at a Mr lube (I was really pressed for time and 400kms overdue) and they tried to sell me the same thing. The guy pointed to a mercedes which looked like it was on an IV of the stuff. It looked like a little can pumping the stuff into who knows what hose/orifice, while the car coughed and choked out a pretty nasty looking black smoke... I politely declined citing that Honda engines don't like additives.

Go with the fuel tank additive/injector cleaner if anything.

The only time I let them do that to my vehicle was my Geo Metro when it wouldn't pass the emissions testing part of the state inspection.

That was the second Suzuki product I have owned and I would not repeat that mistake a third time.

hi JHP,
I just purchased a 2005 LX CRV with 13,000 miles on board, sold by owner. Very well maintained, still, car is very noisy and jolty compared to my other Camry. You're reffering in your post at the "smooth ride"...are you suggesting that it is not that smooth as I thinK? Also, ex owner put ALum wheels and new tires ( Kumho Ecsta HP4) which I initially blamed for the noisy, jolty ride. Does better tires makes a difference in the riding confort?

The CR-V does not have a lot of sound insulation, so noise will always be higher compared to vehicles that have more. Tire tread patterns makes a huge difference in road noise as well. For example, the all-terrain tires I have on now are pretty darn close to the noise level that a regular passenger car tire has. I'm thinking it has to do with the solid center rib but I'm no expert. On the other hand, my winter tires are noisy as hell.

The CR-V has a fairly smooth ride over all in comparison to other vehicles I've had over the years. There are several factors involved with ride quality but the biggest (assuming the suspesion is still stock) is sidewall height (the shorter, the rougher), tire compliance (performance tires have stiffer sidewalls than passenger tires), and unsprung weight (the weight of the tire and wheel). The heavier the tire and wheel package is, the harder the suspesion has to work to control movement and could lead to a harsher ride as well.

The current set up I have is a smoother ride that the stock tires were because of the increased sidewall height and more compliant tire (read higher rolling resistance). In my opinion, the CR-V was fine before ride wise.

The reason I went with the taller all-terrain tire is because of how I use my CR-V. I go camping and hunting, so more ground clearance is desirable. Also, I wanted better off-road traction. Honda vehicles are known to read high speed wise on the speedometer, thus the taller tire also corrects this and gives a more accurate speed reading with the understood probability that my odometer is now probably off due to the tighter legal tolerance requirements on mileage as opposed to required speed tolerance and separate sensors.

Basically, what it comes down to is, how do you use your vehicle and what compromises are you willing to make? If noise is a concern, a smaller block tread will generally be quieter. If higher ride quality is desired stay with a passenger tire or mild touring tire. This all assuming the the tires are still the stock size.

I thought the same about Suzuki before my wife bought a 2000 Esteem before we were married. We still have that car and have had NO problems with it EVER. I do run a bottle of Techron cleaner in both of my cars after every oil change. Never a problem with injectors. But besides the fact Suzuki don't hold its value, I think the esteem has been great, and I would buy another one. At least it didn't have to have an AC compressor and a brake job at 17k miles...LOL
