I know this is talking about gen-1's but actually a little relieving to see some people with gen-2's having the same problem, meaning I'm not the only one.

I've had three (!!) actuators replaced early on (My '02/110k miles) , passenger and both rear. Now the driver's side and back gate ones are gone! I've resolved to take care of the last two myself.

I tried getting at the driver's side a few months ago, using just a screwdriver and stuff like that, and gave up.. Maybe this thread will help a bit.. Does anyone know if the service manual is work getting and might have a detailed procedure (with pics like the OP here) for the Gen 2?

I do have a couple of questions, though.. Sorry if they're rather noob-ish..

1) What's the advantage of the impact screw driver? In other words, what was stopping you here from using a regular screwdriver?

2) Where would one go about getting a door trim removal tool, as mentioned here? That was by far the most annoying part of getting things apart. I always manage to break one clip or something each time I remove door panels (EDIT: I've searched for a bit and the part number is Snap-On A177A.)

1) Impact screw drivers apply force downwards and torque at the same time. They do so with great force. more-so than your wrist can handle. You will not be able to take these screws out unless you have an impact screwdriver.

2) Pull with your hands, but do it only in warm weather. The clips are softer and will not break so easily.

You can get a trim panel removal tool at most auto parts store for far cheaper than a SnapOn tool.

1) The screws on the side of the door that hold the door lock / actuator assembly are factory installed too tight for a standard screw driver. $15 - 20 for a impact screwdriver is a good investment and necessary for these screws.

2) As suggested earlier a door panel tool is available pretty cheap at any auto parts store. I wish use of one guaranteed no broken clips, but alas some risk remains. Repeat "gentle but firm" mantra while working and you might get lucky.

Sorry to hear of more weak actuators. I wish you success in replacing yours.

I had problem with my actuator and decided to go aftermarket, it took me say 30 min to change and rewire it and it only cost me $10. It’s also felt better than the original. 2002 CRV

Harbor Freight kit for cheap. Since the tools are all plastic, why spend a bunch of cash on a Snap-On?

My driver's side actuator failed last Fall after giving me problems for almost two years. Or at least I assume it failed. If I manually unlock the driver's door I can open the others with the fob so I'm not sure if that means the driver's door is the culprit.

Nice posts about replacing it but most people including me can't attempt a job like this. This site skews heavy towards do-it-yourselfers but the majority are not. Anyone in the Chicago area want to do it? I'll be happy to compensate generously for your time. Send me a PM. Otherwise it's the dealership or live without it.

The fact that this problem seems pretty widespread tells me they should be doing some sort of goodwill (similar to the AC compressor).

Honda is certainly mortal and it is evident more and more everyday based on the problems I hear about. I know, still better than most others but one of the extras that cost me $2200 has failed for me and many others way too prematurely and I don't think that's a good thing.

Default Count me as a me2

Honda 2004 CR-V Ex.

Driver side door just started acting up on 2/12. Others will work most times but can only operate the drivers door manually with key or the physical lock.

Not even the button on the door works.

Would this still indicate a actuator problem? Lock is not hard to operate manually and would like to know if a trip to the dealership is in order or not. I try to avoid dealerships when possible.

Thanks,
