Default Adjust Valves BEFORE 105K no matter WHAT the book says!

This is a warning to CRV owners regarding the owners manual's recommended valve inspection/adjustment at 105k.
The owners manual in my '98 says the valves should be inspected at 105k miles. However, if you call most Honda service departments they will tell you that this is not good advice, and recommend a valve adjustment at 30k. DO IT. That's quite a discrepancy!
I just got rid of my '98 CRV at 161K. Over the life of this car I had two burnt valves. The first a little before 105k and the second at 161K. Very expensive to repair!
If you want to see something interesting do a Google search of Honda CRV + valves. Appaerntly this is a very common problem and there are a lot of unhappy Honda owners who had to get valve jobs well before the time the owners manual suggests you get them checked!
I've got to say I'm very dissappointed with Honda, and my dealer, for not letting me know about the discrepancy between the owners manual recommendation and what their service technicians are telling customers.
Again: Don't wait 105K to adjust the valves on your CRV. Do it every 30k. You will save a LOT of money.
I only wish I'd known this 161k miles ago.

Yep, Honda can be just as irresponsible and deceptive as the rest of the manufactures.

if this type of thing only prone to the CR-V's shouldnt honda take care of this stuff under warranty?

weve been through alotta cars, and never had to have the valve adjusted (maybe the ones we had are hydraulics, since every car ive had as been domestic before the V)

I'm not sure 'irresponsible & deceptive' is the best choice of words.

"Over-confident and imprudent" would have been my response.

I heard somebody say: When Honda finds a life-threatening flaw, they gather the engineers around and ask "How can we fix this???"

When Detroit finds a life-threatening flaw, they gather the lawyers and ask "How can we avoid getting sued over this???"

You may find some info here:

http://www.hondasuv.com/main2/viewto...584&highlight=

The problem is you have people who own the 1G telling 2G owners to get their valves adjusted. Different engines.

The facts as I see them:

Honda recommends inspecting the valves on the 1G every X miles. Experience has shown this is not frequent enough. Some are saying check every 15K others every 30K. Take your pick but do it more frequent then 100K.

All well and good but that is for the 1G. Don't think there is enough history to allow a similar statement for the 2G. The Honda tech I know says he has seen no issues with the 2G. You decide what you want to do.

I did my first adjustment at 15k to be safe. I'll do the next check at 30k or 45k (probably the latter) then at least 30k thereafter. Its a 1.5 - 2 hour job max. But this is for G1. I don't think the same potential issues exist on G2

Are you talking in MILES or KILOMETERS here? I think in kilometers, I'm Australian. :P
