Default Timing Chain Replacement 2002 CRV

I've got 102,000 miles on my CRV. The owners manual says 105,000 to replace the timing chain. I understand that is the same guidance for Gen 1 with a timing belt. I'd like to delay the replacement if that makes sense, but I don't want to go too far and end up with a blown motor. Does anyone have experience with changing the chain or not changing and suffereing the consequences? Thx.

Are you sure it's talking about the timing chain and not the drive belt? I thought that was one of the big improvements in the 2nd generation V....NOT having a breakable belt and instead having a chain which never has to be replaced...or at least not every 100k miles...?

I have 102k miles on my 2002 and am getting ready to change the rubber drive belt... called the serpentine belt.

I don't remember anywhere in the manual where it mentions replacing the timing chain. (I have two 02 CRV's). I think you misread the manual. You better look again.

gkirby is right, what I read wasn't in the manual under maintenance but in the dealers booklet on maintenance. I guess that's one way to beef up the service dept revenue

Are you going to change your drive belt soon? I also have 102k miles and mine was making a little noise that belt dressing cleared up but then I started to get some bearing noise from what I believe is the tensioner pulley. So I'm planning to replace both.

The noise I started hearing was like predetonation pinging....but it was definitely from the belt and/or one of the pulleys since I could quiet the noise by further adding dressing. But then I thought that maybe the dressing was acting as a temporary lube for one of the bearings. The dealer listened to it and said the tensioner pulley was wobbling a little more than normal and he though it was its bearing that was causing the noise and the irregular wobbling movement.

I think the timing belt needs to be checked not replaced at 100K miles.

I'm not sure about the timing belt replacement, but I believe it is supposed to be done at 105K miles. I need to check my owner's manual myself.....

Whatever you do, DO NOT exceed the recommended replacement interval. Even if the belt APPEARS to still be good, it has served its useful, recommended life and should be changed. This will give you a margin of safety. I understand the 2.4L 4-cyl is a zero-clearance engine, meaning a timing belt failure will likely be VERY EXPENSIVE (pistons and valves don't do well coming into contact with each other)!

Your US 2004 CR-V has a timing chain, not a timing belt.

The US 1st Gen 2.0L engines had a timing belt that should be replaced at 7 years/105,000 miles whichever comes first.

If you have a 1997-1999 CR-V you should have already replaced the timing belt. If you have a 2000 CR-V you should be planning on the replacement this year.

Both our 1999 and our 2000 say to replace the timing belt at 105,000 miles. Check the maintenance schedule pages.
