Default How To Set 1st Gen Ignition Timing?

Hi,

I'm doing an overall rehab with my son on his CRV. As part of it, I got a new OEM distributor (TD-97) plus plugs and wires. I have ordered a Helms manual but it must be tied up in the holiday mail crunch and I want to install it before I leave on vacation but need help on the procedure.

On my Integra, I need to short out the two pins on the maintenance connector port just inside the passenger's dash to set the timing (16 BDC, I think).

Info that I need------
>>>=Do I need to short a connector or do something similar on the 1997 CRV?
>>>=What is the proper timing for the B20?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How many miles are on the vehicle? Not too many people have reported needing to replace the distributor. What was wrong with it?

I also ask because owners of 1997 CR-V's qualify for FREE plugs, cap, rotor and plug wires replaced by the dealeship, under warranty if taken to the dealer before 150,000 miles. It was essentially a deal cut between Honda and the US EPA.

It's a bit of shooting in the dark. It has 220,000 miles on it at the moment. I'll start from the beginning so that you get the context.

I'll try to make this short.

installed new:
Upper and lower ball joints
Tie rod ends
Brake fluid flush
Front Brake Pads
Front Brake rotors
Front Brake lines
Front Wheel bearings
Radiator and hoses
Thermostat
Plugs & Wires

Following that weekend, he started having an intermittant problem with the motor just shutting off without any prior symptom. It just shut off when he was driving.

My wife had a similar problem with her Civic some time ago. After a lot of troubleshooting it turned out to be a bad power relay in the interior control box. I pulled an identical relay from an Integra control box that I had in the garage and replaced the one in his CRV. No fix. I then put another new power relay into the engine control box. No fix. I then put a new fuel filter into it. No fix.

Called a friend of mine who's a Honda tech and he suggested that it might be the Ignitor. Even though I have a great hook-up for OEM Honda/Acura parts, I had a bird when I saw the cost. I went to eBay to do a search for one and found a guy in Canada selling a whole brand new OEM distributor unit (ignitor, coil, rotor, et al) for $130 plus shipping. I bought it.

So, this will take care of the entire ignition system and hopefully the shutting off problem.

I bet that now having read this epistle you are sorry that you asked.

It sounds like you may have a faulty ignition switch- there was a recall on the gen1 CRVs for it. Apparenlty the engine would shut down randomly without notice. You can simply restart it and everything seems fine. Find out if your son took it in for the recall- if not just take it to a Honda dealer and have them replace it. (this is the key switch on the steering column for starting the car)

Was he able to start it again after it quit? There was a recall on the ignition switch for the earlier CR-Vs (1997-1999 I think).

He did have that recall done in 2004. However, these that you describe are exactly the characteristics we're encountering. hmmmmm?

Oh ya. You guys are right on the money. I finished swapping the distributor and we just took it out for a test drive. Clearly there is a difference in pep by our butt-dynos. So, it can't be a bad thing to have done the job.

However, since you guys are right on the money, we called his Honda dealer to discuss the issue. Their position is that even though he's had the recall and that he has high mileage (220K), they will still perform the swapout service, including parts, at no cost.

I'm shocked. If I walked in to my Honda dealer with a complaint about my S2000 they's throw my keys into an arc welder and tell me that it's driver error. What a difference between models or dealers.

He'll have that done on Wednesday.

Between now and then he's got two gigs and a Yamaha drum demo to do. That ought to put it to at least a 400 mile test prior to Wednesday. I'll be interested to see if it shuts off between now and then.

I'll try to remember to report back to you folks.
