Default Solution to U-Joint problem?

Had a U-Joint problem in 1999 CRV with 130,000 miles. Dealer insists entire prop shaft must be replaced, and he will not consider aftermarket joints as they are "too tricky" to install. Are there decent aftermarket joints available? Are they too tricky to install, as he says? Apparently one (the rear) joint is FUBAR - major vibration between 50 and 70mph - and the front joint could also use replacing as it has some play in it, but cost of new shaft is $700++++! Help!

It is OK to drive with the shaft removed, just don't bend it in the middle when you remove it.

Hello,
First, the dealer is right that replacing a single "u-joint" (more likely a Constant Velocity joint) is probably not in your best interest. A drive shaft with both inner and outer joints can often be purchased for just a few dollars more than the cost of a single joint. And, it obviously comes pre assembled with all new parts and usually either includes the lube, or has the joints already lubricated.
Hopefully, you can find a decent mechanic other than the dealer, as his price seems way out of line.
Finally, do not be afraid of a good quality after market part as sold by one of the major parts stores. They often have lifetime warranties on these types of parts, and are usually very good about honoring their warranties.
Anyway, that's what I would do under similar circumstances.

Nope, they are u-joints.

The propeller shaft is the connection between the transmission in the front of the CR-V and the rear differential. It is not a standard drive shaft, and there are no aftermarket replacement shafts available (at least none that anyone has been able to find).

Nobody has tried taking a CR-V driveshaft to a 4X4 Driveline shop for refurbishment?


There is one in our area (odd to me since we live in Suburbia), and that guy really knows his stuff...he caught all the nuances of my old Triumph's half-shafts without me having to tell him.

The shop is just full of Jeep and Truck driveshafts. This guy not only replaces the u-joints, he checks the shafts for balance and makes sure they are vibration-free. He can get all sorts of hard-to-find sizes of joint, or he can make a common size fit a weird or outmoded application.

There is nothing like a specialist in any field!

I think one guy on the forum had his rebuilt with a Suzuki U joint but I think he has been having problems with it. When my DS failed it went out with a literal BANG. I would say get it replaced ASAP. call some auto wreckers.

BTW I was thinking of trying to find a rubber sleeve of boots to put over my U joints to prevent water and salt from getting at them- think this is a good idea? bad idea (risk of trapping the stuff inside)?

Many have taken the propeller shaft off and had a driveline shop replace the U-joints, myself included. Mine is working perfect a year later.

Search 'propeller and shaft' or 'rockford' for many threads.

You can take it out yourself, you can drive the V without it, and you can get the shop to order in the parts from Rockford. As mentioned, don't bend it in the middle or you'll destroy the middle seal.. Be sure to tell the shop that they will be buying you a new propeller shaft if they wreck the middle seal. Take pictures if you have to.

The new joints have grease nipples, so you have to remind Monkey Lube to grease them for you.

I've found a shop locally that will replace both joints with aftermarket joints made specifically for the CRV - they look identical to the ones that were taken out. The guy said he's done a few and works on behalf of a couple of local dealers. Says he's never had a comeback, and has done a couple of old Civic Wagons as well. The shop is located in Mississauga, Ontario. He'll replace both joints (sealed, no nipples) and re & re the shaft for $250. He even guarantees his work for a year, the same warranty as the u-joints. I plan on finding out the brand of u-joint so others can avoid the pain of replacing an entire propshaft. Much better than the $800 for the shaft plus labour at the dealer!!!!

My guy seems to think Spicer brand UJs are the best.

You will find varying opinions on whether the greasable or sealed UJs are the best design. (I have no opinion 'cause I've never worn out TWO sets of joints on any of my vehicles...)
