Default Blown Fuses with Front Power Accessory Socket

I own a 2005 Honda CRV SE. Using my cell phone charger in the power accessory socket on the front dash causes the fuse (15 amp) to blow soon thereafter. I also tried the charger in the rear power accessory socket, and that fuse (10 amp) blew immediately. I can use the cell phone charger in the socket in our other car (Mercury Sable; 20 amp fuse) with no problems. I also put a multimeter on the spade end of the cell phone charger when I plugged it into the Sable and got readings of 5.1 volts and .75 amps, well below what the CRV circuit should handle. Has anyone else with a CRV run into a problem with blown fuses when using the power accessory socket on the front dash?

The 3/4A current reading is a steady state value. There may be a turn on surge when you first plug in the charger, which can blow the fuse if the fuse is a fact acting type.

More likely a bad plug design that shorts in the Honda sockets.

Quite possibly the answer. Check for char marks on the charger. Also you are testing on the end after the converter, totally different from what the converter is using to end up with that. Although.... even if it were 50% efficient, that's not going to blow it. Here's the math.

P(ower)=IV

P in * 50% = P out

IV/2=IV

I*12/2=5.1*.75
12I/2=3.825
12I=7.65
I=.6375A

The converter would only be using about half an amp. This is of course all hypothetical. BUT is also a good way to show how when there's less voltage, electronics tend to make up for it with amperage.

Welcome to HondaSUV.com. I see you own a multimeter so perhaps you understand what awsnap is saying. When I read it, it went like "Womp Womp Womp Womp Womp". JK awsnap, I know you're the stereo dude.
With an '05 you should still be covered by warranty, right? Take it back to the dealer. JMO

Default fuse problems

Hi Gnuenglander,

Did you figure out the problem? We seem to have similar problems. I just posted this today.

"Yesterday, I just purchased an '05 LX. I'm very excited because it fits my lifestyle / pursuits perfectly, but there was a bit of a damper as I left the lot. My radio didn't work. I quickly turned around and put the car into service. It turns out a fuse a blown. The service person asked if I put anything into the electrical outlet. I said that I put my phone charger in. He said that you have to be careful when inserting phone chargers or anything else you want to power such as a disc player, etc. If the inserted part of the AC touches the side of the outlet, a fuse can be blown. This seems to be a major flaw or at the very least, an annoyance. I've never heard of this happening, and it's never happened to me in my old beat up Mitsubishi Montero. Is this a bunk explanation?"

I would quickly replace my outlet with one from radio shack.

1. ohms meter , is it a positive +12vdc or -12vdc? reading on the correct leads

makes a diference.

2. the fuse in the cell phone charger , what size is it?
and you blow the car fuse fist. not correct? the car cell phone fuse should blow if it is faulty, and if not then you are overloading to the outlet

I would try a test out get a 15 amp fuse, a 20 amp fuse on a home made outlet and see what happens direct to the battery............
if the 15 holds . then you need to stop fooling around and make that trip to the dealer , instead of building up items like they say today and then go in. the longer you wait the harder to repair the dmage.
