P1298 - ELD - How do I repair this?

I did a search under CEL P1298 and read thru all of the postings. Someone mentioned a $40 fix and another mentioned repairing it by soldering. Unfortunately, neither threads had specific instructions on how to do these procedures. Can someone tell me where the ELD is, what is looks like and what needs to be done to repair it (preferable a cheap DIY fix). Thanks

It's on a circuit board behind the fusebox.

Sorry, don't know how much it costs to replace, or an easy fix.

Hmmm. Circuit board? Is it a faulty solder joint on the circuit board, similar to the Gen 1 clock issue? Hoping for more information so I can try to repair this as well.

I had the same code and followed this service bulletin and the code has been cleared for a while. It was easy to repair and not expensive.

On the 2003 CRV. After I replaced both O2 sensors I did another scan and this code came up.

Thanks for the pdf. Do you have any idea where the defective solder joint is? If I take the ELD out and inspect it, will the defective joint be obvious to the eye and is accessible? I would prefer to repair this myself if at all possible.

If you look at Step 8, the ELD appears to be a small black cube.
It doesn't appear to be a circuit board that can be repaired.

The part number on the first page, 38255-S5A-003, lists for $28.37, and is available online for about $21 + shipping.
I'd just buy a new one.

Thanks Rac - as usual. Any idea what this part does? I mean if I replace it what improvements should I expect? $28 is cheap but if its just a BS part then I can do without.

Basically, it monitors the electrical current draw and tells the ECU when it needs to tell the alternator to start charging the battery, instead of just spinning, and it also tells the ECU when the electrical draw is okay, and then the ECU tells the alternator to stop charging.

So yes, it's important, and no, you can't do without it.
