Default 2005 CRV Brake Fluid Replacement Interval

Hi:

I purchased a new 2005 CRV LX in Feb. 2005 which just hit 30,000 miles. The 2005 "Honda Service History" booklet lists services for "50,000 Miles or 3 Years", and then the next listing is for 3 Years: "Replace brake fluid, independent of mileage". I've had service done at the dealer per the "Honda Service History" booklet (regular use, not severe) while the car remains under warranty.

The dealer says the 30,000 mile maintenance should include flushing the brake system and renewing fluid. Based on the booklet, I think this is sooner then even Honda recommends and would like to postpone it until the three years are up. Assuming the car was manufactured in say, November 2004, the 3 years wouldn't fall until (at least) November 2007. Any thoughts on this?

BTW, for their 30,000 mile package (LOF, rotate tires, new air filter, adjust drive belt(s), new cabin filter, flush and fill brakes, and inspections of various other components (e.g., tie rods, battery, lube hinges/latches, etc.) this dealer charges $362.60.

Most people here seem to believe in 3 year intervals for the brake fluid, regardless of mileage.

Dealers always "suggest" things that are beyond what the manual says is needed. It helps their profit margin. Most of these things are extras or things you can do yourself. The cabin air filter is very easy to do yourself. Watch the videos by fellow member Roadster, which are located in the "sticky" under the Clinical Rounds forums, near the top.

It is the FIRST thread in this forum, the one in which you posted...

That's why you've come here . . . Half of that stuff is DIY owner's manual stuff. Help for doing the rest is, as mentioned, available here.

Spend some of the money you save on a pair of overalls, a floor jack, and a torque wrench.

First, read the Owner's Manual, then SEARCH, your Internet is STILL WAY faster than mine.

Default Additional Background

I looked at Roadster's videos... you are the man!

I do alot of DIY, but, with the CRV, I'm a little worried since it's still under warranty. I figure if I don't have the dealer do something in the book and then something major sh**s the bed within the warranty period, they may try to get out of honoring it by claiming that I didn't do the required maintenance... but maybe that's not a legittiomate concern...

Thank you.

It's illegal in the US for a dealer or manufacturer to require that you take the vehicle to them for service in order for the warranty to remain in affect (Magnuson-Moss Act of 1975). You need to have the services done, either by a dealer, an independent mechanic, or DIY. The key is to keep appropriate records.

Keep the receipts for the parts and fluids you buy, and make notes about date and mileage for the service tasks you do.
