Honda Post Icon HRV Y reg knocking sound from n/s fr wheel

For a while now there's been a knocking sound coming from the n's front wheel, on full lock it doesn't do it, only over rough ground and slow speed, there's nothing from the o/s front, i had the car up and grabbed the wheel left to right and there's a knocking and some play when i move the wheel left to right but other than that i can't see anything else, is there anyone with knoledge as to what this is? plz all answers greatfully recieved. TY

In addition to this problem i just found an empty carpark and put on full lock both ways, full lock left there's a whining sound, full lock right there's a whining sound and a clunk but not like a CV joint clunking just a single clunk like something settling into another possition.

this one seems easy and largely spoken over all HR-V websites... change rear diff oil. Use only DPF, sold at honda.

You know that holding the wheel to the full-lock position is not advised? Check the Owner's Manual.

Yes, it will cause the power steering to make sick noises, but if it is the rear differential complaining, a litre of HONDA fluid will solve it for another 50,000 Km.

it's more concerning to me that there is play in the wheel, maybe baring, as for full lock if i perform a 3 point turn i have lock both ways and never heard this before. Appreciate the response TY

    Hi,

The whine may well be the rear diff fluid, and if it's been a while since it was last done (or you don't know), it's cheap and worthwhile doing. As you say, the play in the front wheel suggests there's something else going on, likely in addition. At a guess, tie rod ends? If you have a friend, have them sit in the car and rock the steering back and forth while you are under the front end watching the steering links for any play. Apparently HR-V's are also susceptible to top shock bearing failure, manifests itself as a rattling noise.

In the UK, car registration, or licence or number plates are tied to the year and location of first registration. For instance, the number plate on my 1999 begins with a 'T'. A 'Y' reg corresponds to 2001 I think. There were two registration letters per year, one from March, the next from September. They keep running out, so every 20 years or so, they change the system. I've seen suffix letters, prefix letters, and now it's a numerical reference, eg this year registrations are xx13 xxx from March and as of Sept will be xx63 xxx, until March 2014...

OhhKaaay, so it just means it's a 2001 model.

    Weird.
