Default 2003 Honda HRV - New owner questions

    Morning all..
Recently purchased a HRV 5 door UK car.
I have owned several CRV's in the past so familar with this type of Honda vehicle to a point.
Im loving the HRV , with it's raised height and 1.6 engine which is excellent on fuel for a 4x4.
Anyway the car had been stood for a few months in a local garage as a part ex and needed some TLC , battery was dead, green mould on window trims , genreally dirty etc...
So I have put a new battery in her, topped up oil and water and gave her a good valet since then running like a dream but a couple of niggly issues :

Last service a year ago at 69000 car currently has 81000....

Car is using oil not a lot but topping it up once a week and noticed a tiny amount of white smoke each morning but only when car is cold after a few mins it has gone - could this be piston rings or valvues ?

Clunking sound from rear mostly on slow driving 20-30mph especially when hitting bumps also a little when on half lock or reverse which sounds like something is moving around in boot ...obviously checked in here also checked exhaust and bracket but not coming from here - could it be rear diff fluid (as probs needs replacing ) or anti roll link bars...im hoping it's not rear diff issue...

Car is due in local garage on Monday 10th Sep for a full service ( the guy is a honda owner so knows the cars really well as my CRV's have been taken here ) and will check out the rear for the knocking, also asked him to change gearbox and dual rear pump fluid too.

Apart from a slight squeak on drivers seat I love the car and cant believe how neglected it was !!!
    Any comments most welcome...

I am a new owner too, and i love the car like you do!

The clunking sound from the back on bumbs is something i have too. I realized that it is the little link rods at left and right of the anti roll bar, they are just a little loose, but they should be 100% tight. The local Honda dealer wanted 95euros (80 pounds) for each (they are not very bright people...) but i found them online in UK for much less:

The smoke might also be the PCV valve, that is very cheap. I would start from there.

Hi thanks for the reply , I shall take at look at those roll bar links although may replace the anti roll itself , there not that expensive bought from a non dealer ( had same issue in two of my CRV's )
As for the PCV valve will get that checked over..all in all the kind of repairs which should not be too expensive...cheers !

Had the car four weeks and for three of them drove to Berwick on the borders of Scotland, then to London then Norfolk and surrounding areas..considering the car had been sat for nearly three months is testament to it's build quality..oh the 16 inch alloys look pretty smart too..

why replace the anti roll bar itself? there is no point doing that, if it is not broken or bended.

the things that go loose are those links and maybe the rubber bushings.

I had those fail on my CRV brfore just thinking it may be worth replacing those, then again need to get the car checked over first if it is just bushes then straight foward replacement.

I've had mine a week now and had the same issue of knocking from the rear. Traced it to the anti roll bar bushes 11-11 from the dealer for the pair and will be fitting them tomorrow if not I'll change the drop links front and rear can get them off eBay for 25 for the full set. I've just given mine a full service changing all the filters including the cabin filters which were minging. Just doing the little bits that need doing will post some pics up shortly.

    Beware the front squeak.

Search threads in CR-V forums re: 'lower Right ball joint' Look at external link you'll find.

Thanks for the great answers so far...just another quick one relating to the oil useage
Is it worth getting a full service done on the car or get the possible oil issue sorted first.
I ask as the car is well overdue a service and as stated was stood for 3 months so wondering if a full change of oil and fluids may fix the problem of oil being used.No point in paying for a full service if I then need to pay for a possible valve or piston issue !

Your PCV is probably rusted broke. Once the internal spring stops 'regulating' the airflow, your oil vapor can be quickly sucked out of the engine and invisibly burned.

Get the real HONDA part. HonDA knows how to build a proper PCV.

Your part numbers and diagrams (to find the thing on your engine) are at Lings.

SEARCH 'lings Europe' for a link.
