    Default What tire pressure do you run?

    Hello,

    Just got around to checking the tires on the new CR-V this morning. The door pillar says 30 psi, but mine are all ~40-41.

    So, what do you guys run in yours? I normally over inflate a bit to help fuel economy, but usually more in the 10-15% range rather than 25%. Think I need to adjust these?

    The ride's a little harsh but the mileage on the first two tanks has been good, 26.5 on the first and 28 on the second.

    You must like and trust Honda since you bought one. Yet, you don't trust their recommendation re tire pressure?

    It came from the dealer this way, so you're suggesting that they don't trust Honda? Or did it come from Honda this way and the dealer never looked? So Honda is lying about the tire pressure?

    Your dealer's employee did not do his/her job. It's part of pre-delivery inspection. All new vehicles come with high pressure for transit.

    As part of the pre-delivery preparation of the CR-V the dealer should have adjusted all of the tires to the correct pressure.
    Obviously they missed at least that step of the work, so I wonder what else was missed?

    I would set the tires to the Honda recommended pressure and drive for a few days.
    Then increase the pressure by a few PSI and drive a few more days and see how you like the ride.

    Higher pressure will get you better fuel mileage, but also means a harsher ride.

    I run my 2006 CR-V tires at 32 PSI.

    Ok, thanks for the info. I just thought it was strange that they were that much higher than the recommended setting. I put them down to 34 and we'll try that and see.

    I think the door jam sticker is the tire & vehicle manufacturers plushest safe setting possible. I'm always willing to trade little plushness and road noise for higher mileage.

    Hello WyMark, your questions was one of the ones that I considered asking. Some of the people on here seem a little testy, not sure why. I've had my CR-V since May 19th and when I checked the tire pressure a couple of days after I took delivery they also read 40 psi. My mother had also bought a CR-V about 6 weeks before me and when I was at my parents I took my gauge and also measured 40 psi on hers as well. We both have the Bridgestone dueler tires. The max inflated pressure on the tire says 44 psi. The inside of the drivers door is 30 psi. I may go half way in between about 37 psi. I'm getting 29 miles per gallon average on the last 4 fill-ups. The ride doesn't really bother me with the 40 psi in the tires but, I'll see how it does knocking it down a bit.

    They may be testy, but they're also correct.

    Dealers skip the tire inflation part of the pre-delivery inspection all the time. And if they skipped that... what else did they skip?

    Also recall that the Tire Pressure Monitoring System will alert you if the tire pressure is too low, but won't if it's too high. Since the dealer doesn't really want you coming back for something trivial, they'll sometimes over-inflate the tires, relying on owner apathy to allow them to gradually lose pressure. By the time of the 1st oil change, they may be at the correct inflation...

    I usually run 2 psi over what the door sticker recommends. For me, it's a good trade-off between cushy ride, handling, gas mileage, and tire wear.

    Something else to check on your new CR-V -- the lug-nut torque.

    Dealer mechanics usually use air wrenches to tighten them down, and even with the "torque sticks", the torque is both too high and uneven. This causes two big problems:

    - You are unable to get the wheel off when you're by the side of the road trying to change a flat.

    - It pulls the disc brake rotor out of true, so you'll end up with warped discs and pulsating brakes, and an expensive repair.

    The lug-nuts on your CR-V should be tightened to 85 ft-lbs. It's best if you used a real torque wrench for this, but if you don't have one, you can use the factory wrench, and applying just your UPPER body weight to it. No need to "stomp" on the end of the wrench, since 85 pounds applied to the end of the foot-long lever results in 85 ft-lbs.

    Remember to alternate lug-nuts as you go around, so do #1, #3, #5, #2 and then #4.

    Amen! Great point.

    After service, I always check tire pressure and lug torque. Rarely is everything correct.
