    Default Clunking/knocking noise from rear

    Hi All

Another newbie HR-V owner here and, to date, very pleased with it apart from a very annoying knocking/clunking from the rear of the car.

When I test drove it the trader said the noise was from the plastic cover over the spare wheel, which I took as being true. However, having now bought the car I have taken out the parcel shelf, spare wheel cover and all the tools so that there's nothing loose in the back, and still there's a clunking/knocking noise, most noticeably over bumps.

I am annoyed with myself for not checking the advisories with VOSA on the last MOT (someone had conveniently torn the original off the current certificate) and I found out that the Rear Anti Roll Bar bushes on both sides were listed as deteriorated, but no excessive movement. Also, when the service was carried out last August, the Honda dealership listed two Amber items that the owner needed to be aware of:
    • Rear diff, front mount worn
    • Suspension arms rear, worn

Could any of the above be causing the knocking noise?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Seems possible. Have you been under there to have a look?

'sway bar links' usually go 'clack', but the sway bar bushings are often responsible for a thunk or clunk.

In the CR-V forums there's a dozen good threads about 'rear noise' or 'rear clunk'.

The stabilizer bushings are expensive to do, and often don't matter much, so don't start there. See also the threads about using the 'grease gun needle'. Most CR-V stuff applies to HR-V just as well.

    search it out.

Thanks for the tips. Wasn't aware that a lot of CR-V stuff applied to HR-V too - I'll have to remember that for the future. But to be honest, I am still confused as to what to look for! I thought the sway bar and stabilizer bar were the same thing, i.e. item no.2 on this link:-

    http://www.hondaoriginalparts.com/ho...block_03=19417

And therefore the bush that needs looking at is item no.3? Sounds like I am wrong, so could someone confirm which item/s I should be checking?

    Sorry for sounding so dumb!

    Cheers guys.

Harry, I meant the diagnostic approach is basically the same. Those 'highlighted' words are Search Keywords you can try.

Also, a more thorough description of your noise may help with diagnosis. Is it loud from outside or only inside, sharp or dull 'thunk', when hitting potholes, climbing uneven driveway, etc.

Is that a photo of an HR-V, mrtn ??

You just need to add much grease between the bar and the red sway bar bushings mentioned above and goodbye noises. I had the same problem.

It's a dull knock and sounds like metal on metal, and it's more prominent when hitting uneven surfaces, I don't notice it at all when travelling on smooth roads. I'm going to take a closer look at the bushes this morning and see if there's anything there that'll give any clues!

No, it's not the HR-V bar but most cars have exactly the same type of solution as pictured, including the HR-V. Adding grease is good temporarily, but you should really change the bushings, as the slack allows dust to go between the rod and rubber and will start wearing out the metal part. After that you will have permanent clunking even with new bushings.

The knock is rather loud and clear because the rubber hardens over time and is as hard as wood in the end. Also, the links knock hard and a bit more hollow. The origin of sound could be fake because these sounds travel through the body and may appear in another place. The only suspension problem I had were the rear stabilizer bushings but I heard the clunking coming from the front.
