    Default Check Fuel Cap Warning

I just got a warning message "Check Fuel Cap" in my dash. I took a look and everything was fine. I filled up two days ago but the message just popped up. The manual said to re-tighten and the warning should go away in a couple of DAYS. Has anyone else seen this? Is this going to be a long term issue?

If you don't tighten the gas cap after filling up you could get that indicator.
Odd that it happened two days after filling up, though.

Did you tighten the cap when you checked it?

This is a 2012, And it is in ' Lettering" vs a mil light.

I find it quite annoying if this is that case.

    would you not agree?

Yes, it was already tight. I always tighten it a few clicks after I fill up. And yes, it popped up two days after filling which is what's puzzling. The only anomaly was that I was parked on a hill. Don't know how/if that would affect it.

It's also possible the seal on the gas cap has gone bad. Since this is a 2012 and an emissions-related component, you're covered under warranty. Get the dealer to see if it still holds pressure, and replace if not.

    Default Theory???

The "check engine light" tripped on my V after being parked in sub freezing weather for the first time in months. It ended up being the fuel cap (thanks Voss Honda for reading and clearing the code free of charge).

I put a new cap on it but honestly, i think it may have been the drastic change in temp causing issue somehow. I pulled out of a 50 degree garage, drove 50 miles, and parked it in 10 degree weather outside. After 5 hours, drove off and after it warmed up the light came on. It's an all new deal for the car as our last house had an uninsulated detached garage.

So, what could it be? well, when gas sloshes around, it builds up pressure. Shake a gas can sometime and you'll see what I mean. I think perhaps the emissions system detects this pressure as a properly operating fuel cap. If you take a plastic gas can from warm and put it in the cold, the sides go in, indicating negative pressure. perhaps somehow the emissions system gets tricked into thinking this negative pressure is some sort of gas cap leak and trips the light.

I saw this on mine a couple of times, and both times happened a day or two after filling up. It was only a few months old when I saw it. I just loosened it and tightened it when it did, but I haven't seen it in a couple years.

You can thank the EPA for this - and your Honda isn't the only vehicle that can/will have this happen. It is what it is.

It is perfectly normal for it to take a few days for the notice to "go away". The computer must "see" three trips, A trip being something similar to driving for several miles, trans going into each gear, a few starts/stops, engine fully warmed up, etc.

I have "lettering" on the 2005, as well.

Hope that's the case woth our Japanese-made '07 CR-V. My wife just told me 'check gas cap' showed on the dash. I filled it up last time, and now it's almost empty. The sudden temperature drop might have tripped it. At least I hope so. She just filled it up, and told me all concerned it was still showing, but told her it might require a few more ignition cycles to clear. If not, I'm glad to be reminded here it's an emissions component, and should be covered under warranty. Car just hit 50K miles.

EDIT: warning went away at 3rd ignition cycle. All is well folks.
