Default 2004 CRV: Largest Diameter Tire?

I bought a used 2004 Honda CRV. The previous owner installed 16" wheels/tires from a Civic (205/60R16) which has a diameter of 652.40mm. This is smaller than the OEM wheel/tire (205/70R15) which has a diameter of 668mm. Consequently, I have a large gap between the tires and the fenders.

I'd like to upgrade the tires with the largest diameter possible without causing rubbing. I'm considering a 215/70R16 which is slightly wider (8.46") and has a larger diameter (707.40mm).

Bottom line, what is the largest diameter tire I can safely put on a 2004 (2nd gen) CRV?

    Thanks!

Do a web search for miata tire sizer. It is a web site that you can use to compare tire sizes to the original tire size as well as other things. That will help you some. I believe the biggest 15" tire that anyone has put on a gen 2 without modifying the suspension, is 225/70R15. That will help you figure out the biggest 16" you can get using the site I previously mentioned.

Thanks for the website. I'll be sure to check that out.

There are 2 components (as I see it) that affect clearance of the fender...tire width and diameter. If I find the equivalent 16" diameter for the largest 15" you mentioned, can I be certain the WIDTH won't cause a rubbing issue?

Which is more critical....diameter or width?

Width will only cause you problems if you're changing the offset...such as widening your track. Since it sounds like you're using OEM Honda wheels, the offset is pretty normal, and 225-width tires should be fine.

My best suggestion for you, with 16" wheels, would be 225/65/16. As you know, the '04 V came with 205/70/15 originally, and they were laughably small. The '05-06 models, with the exact same wheel wells, came with 215/65/16, which is 18mm bigger in diameter, and still leaves some wiggle room for upsizing. 225/65/16 adds 13mm more in diameter to the 215/65s, while 215/70/16 adds 22mm, which may or may not be too much.

Here's the site Mike was talking about, by the way:

Thanks, I was on my phone earlier and didn't have the website on hand. Work blocks the forum now, so that's the best I can do when away from the computer.

Thanks Guys....I really appreciate the suggestions.

After reading some of the other forum posts, I was considering getting the 225/60/16, but I suppose I could try the 225/65/16 for the extra sidewall (and larger diameter).

I'm ordering online (tirerack.com), so I'm worried about getting too big and the tires will rub or look funny.

I ended up buying the Yokohama AVID TRZ in 225/65/16. At first, I was concerned they might be too big, but after comparing them to the stock wheels on the '05-06, the difference is minimal. And, the 225 will give me a slightly wider tire for better grip on the road.

I'll try to post before/after photos when I have them installed.

Thanks again for the great feedback!
