Default Catalytic converter heat shield fell off - should I replace?

    Hi there.

Well, the subject just about says it all. The catalytic converter heat shield started a small rattle. Part of it was rusting and I didn't get it replaced when I was last at the dealer (I believe they quoted $200.) Shortly after that visit, near home, the heat shield fell right off.

A quick search implies that this isn't much of a safety issue unless you park on grass. I don't. But I thought I'd post here to hear you smart people's opinions!

    Thanks!

What year CR-V do you have??? If it's a 2007-2011 CR-V, there is no way it should have fallen off already and the dealer should replace it for free.

If you have a 1997-2001 or a 2002-2006 CR-V, it's nothing to worry about. Like you said, as long as you don't park in long grass.

Also, I'll be moving this thread to the clinical rounds in the 1997-2006 forums if you do have a gen 1 or a gen 2.

It's an '07. So out of warranty for this component, I would assume. (Or is this covered under 5-year?)

you should look underneath and see if the top half of the heat shield is still there - if it is do the worm clamp fix and secure it so you do not lose that part - it keeps your feet cool by blocking the heat tranfer to the floor of your CRV. search on 'heat shield' for more posts on this topic.

Mine was rattling and dealer said not covered under warranty (Cat. is but heat shield doesn't come with new cat. so it is not) Dealer said that unless you park in high grass, shield really not needed. I cut both the top & bottom shields off.

That is a good point. The catalytic converter runs 100+ degrees hotter than the manifold. Why fry the undercoating / paint off the underside?

I knew there was a reason I couldn't force myself to throw away (recycle) the top shield.

Sounds like a cheap way to get heated seats!

Mine rattled about two years back. Dealer wanted $250 to replace the heat shield when I went for some other TSB work done. I went to Home Depot and got 2 stainless steel hose clamps for $3 and 5 minutes under the car, and voila - rattle gone! Make sure you do it when your V is cold.

Actually, there is another stainless heat shield mounted to the under body to protect the floor board area above the cat. The top of the heat shield I removed was the one top half of the cat. shield. This is a two part shield which is attached to the cat itself.

What is the emission warranty in Canada? Even in the US, I would raise all kinds of heck with Honda in that the heat shield is a part of the cat and should be covered. On an 07, this should not happen.
