Default Whistle or vacuum noise on 2001

Hello - My 2001 has had a slowly developing whistle or vacuum sounding noise for several years. It is most noticeable when the engine is shut off and the noise continues for about 3 seconds. It is now starting to get louder. I have not been able to locate the source since it does not last long enough. But, it does seem to be around the back right side of the engine compartment.

I have 128000 miles and none of the vacuum hoses have ever been replaced (to my knowledge). I have not noticed any other symptoms.

Any suggestions or specific experience out there?

    Thanks!

Have you tried opening the hood while the engine is running, then having someone else shut off the engine so you can try to locate the sound?

Not yet ... I have also tried running my fingers along the more obvious hoses to see if I could feel any cracks (especially along the bends and at the connections.

Would anyone know about how many different vacuum hoses the CRV (Gen 1) has (assuming this is the problem)?

Have you noticed any change in fuel mileage?
A vacuum leak can have adverse affects.

With the location you mention it coming from, any change in your brakes?
Your power brake booster is there.

I haven't really noticed anything. The transmission seems to be shifting a little hesitantly (A/T). But, if it has changed, it is very very subtle. The brakes are good, the gas mileage is still about the same (22-23 in-town).

I am not adverse to just start replacing the vacuum hoses.

Just to add a little more info. I "seem" to think the noise was concentrated around the pvc valve/hoses - maybe coming from under the throttle housing (I think that is what it is called - I'm at work and w/o a manual).

All of those hoses are 10 years old.

Mine is around the back side of the intake manifold. I'm thinking it is the seal for the IACV valve but I'm not sure. It might be the seal on the plenum chamber sealing the two halves or the grommet that seals the chamber to the intake manifold. I've been waiting for it to warm up to investigate. The IACV screen might need cleaning any way, so I'm going to start there.

Check the sticky on cleaning your IACV for more information.

The vacuum assist on the brakes has a one-way valve, I think.

It could also be the cruise control, which is vacuum operated.

Really, is it unexpected that the vacuum should 'die' after a few minutes?

I'm not sure on the brake booster but there is a check valve on the cruise control. It is possible that that valve is sticking open or not sealing properly.

Through, in my case, I suspect it's isn't the valve since the cruise control seems to be maintaining speed properly. I'm not gonna rule out the possiblity though.

I think (repeat - I think) I found the source of the noise. During the last couple of days, I decided to perform some maintenance (plugs, wires, rotor and cap, filter, transmission spill n fill, etc). During all this minor surgery, I included a new PVC valve. And, it appears the noise is gone or greatly reduced. Of course, now that I have publicly declared victory - the noise will probably return!
