    Default 2003 Honda Pilot engine light on - Diagnostic Trouble Code P0740

    My 2003 Honda Pilot engine light came on yesterday. I brought it to a mechanic and the OBD II scanner reported a code of P0740. This code indicates a a Torque Converter Clutch Circuit/solenoid Malfuction. The mechanic said the Torgue Coverter may need to be replaced. He can change the solenoid but he doesn't think it's the problem. The repair will cost around $1500. How easy it is to replace this solenoid? Anyone has any instruction on how to do this? I also want to get some feedback on how I should take care of this problem.

    We need to back up a few feet..... Not enough info to go on.

    What's the mileage, what service has been done previously, have you checked your vehicle's VIN for any recalls / TSB's, have you recently done something new (like towed a trailer), did you ask a real Honda shop about their opinion, have you Googled 'honda pilot P0740', when does your manual say you should change the tranny fluid, and (finally) what country are you in ? ? ?

    The SUV has close to 200K miles located in Northern California. I'm not sure when the transmission fluid was changed. Honda service said there is only one recall which has to do with the transmission 2nd gear, and this car had the recall service completed. He didn't see any other recall/TSB that applies to the P0740 code. Since the mechanic reset the engine light, Honda service suggested driving it to see if the the error code reappear. I'm going to replace the transmission fluid (not sure this help)? Anything else I should change?

    That's the best idea. If the fluid is exhausted, the computer starts picking up on it's failing reaction times. Just be sure to use ONLY HONDA Z1, and do it at least twice. After you see the stuff on the magnet, you'll know why three times is recommended.

    Sorry for asking this but what do you mean by the stuff on the magnet? Where is the magnet?

    The transmission bolt that you take out to drain the A/T fluid is magnetized so any metal shavings/particles from the transmission will stick to it and not swirl around the transmission fluid and parts.
    It may look it is covered with grease but if you look at it closely it will have very very fine metal particles. Clean it with a paper towel after draining the old fluid.

    The P0740 code means the tcc circuit malfunction, this occurs when the clutch discs are worn and the only fix is a reman trans or rebuilding yours completely....
