    Default Lock Actuator Replacement Gen 1 CR-V

    If you own a Gen 1 CR-V sooner or later your locks are going to give you problems. The most likely fault is with the lock actuator. The actuator is unfortunately not as reliable and long lasting as you might hope.

    I’ll show you how I replaced both front door lock actuators. Other potential fixes:
    - Some on this forum have successfully fixed their locks by removing the entire door latch and lubing it with graphite based spray. Reducing the binding of latch components makes it easier for the actuator to do its job.
    - You could also replace the entire door latch which includes the lock actuator for nearly $200 (discounted on line Honda dealer price). This would certainly address both binding latch components and the worn out actuator.

    Tools you’ll need:
    - long thin flat blade screw driver
    - Phillips head screw driver
    - Impact screw driver
    The impact screw driver is about $20 at Sears. It comes with several Phillips head and flat blade tips. You use the screw driver with a hammer. Hitting the top of the screw driver handle applies both down force and twisting force. I doubt you could remove the screws holding the latch without an impact screw driver. This is also a must have tool for removing front disc rotors.
    Link to impact driver at Sears . A similar tool that is less expensive and probably somewhat lower quality, but appears capable at Northern Tools .

    Parts:
    I replaced both front door actuators and a bushing that holds one of the lock rods to the outside door handle.
    72134-SM1-003 BUSH, HANDLE JOINT (OUTER), 2, $1.04 each
    72115-S03-G11 ACTR, R. FR. 1 $80.99
    72155-S03-J11 ACTR, L. FR. 1 $80.99

    1. Remove the inside door handle. This was a little tricky because it is not obvious that after removing the screw you need to slide the handle forward. After the handle is free from the door panel you need to disconnect a lock rod and an electrical connector from the switch (door lock switch on driver side and window switch on passenger or other doors).



    2. Remove the inside door panel. See the picture below. There are a few screws and the rest are pins that you can gently pry the panel off. Be sure to remove the speaker so you can also remove the screws that are holding the panel to the door.



    3. Remove the armrest support and pull back the plastic so you have access to the inside of the door. Try to keep the plastic intact and you should be able to push it back after you are done. Good luck keeping the goopy adhesive off your hands and tools.



    4. There are two lock rods that connect to the outer door handle. You need to remove these before you can remove the latch mechanism (with the actuator).
    One of the lock rods will be difficult to remove, but put twisting a long thin flat blade screw driver successfully popped the rod from the bushing. These are the bushings that you should also replace.

    Outside handle lock rod – remove by twisting long thin flat blade screwdriver:



    Other lock rod – remove by pushing plastic connector off rod




    5. Remove the window channel. This is necessary so that you can remove the latch assembly.
    There is one bolt on the outer edge of the door. Remove the bolt (10mm head) and then slide the window channel down. Snake the window channel out the door hole.



    6. Remove the latch assembly by using your impact screw driver on the three Phillips head screws on the outer edge of the door.



    7. Remove the actuator from the latch assembly. It is held by two screws and removed should look like the picture below.




    Installation is reverse of above. Be careful not to bend or change the position of the lock rod connectors. If something does not seem to go into place easily then stop, find out what and why there is binding. If these parts do not slide together smoothly something is out of place. Forcing any of these parts together will cause a broken part and much grief.

    I am happy to have restored automatic locking.

    Yes, very informative post, I vote for a sticky! I've already swapped out my drivers side, and did some surgery on my passenger side to keep everything working.

    Lack of power locks will not keep your CR-V off the road, but sometimes the little things make a big difference in how you feel about your car.

    I added a couple of links to impact drivers in the write-up. This is a tool that you will use rarely, but when you do nothing else will do.

    Yeah, especially as was my case where the failing actuator was the front passenger door. My significant other was not happy when it didn't work, and thought I was locking her out.

    I have this same issue with my Gen-2. I tried following a similar procedure you posted, but I had to give up on it after 2+ hours. it really is very hard to get the darn thing out!!!!!
