Thread: pop/clunk/knock noise from front suspension on 97 lx awd

Default pop/clunk/knock noise from front suspension on 97 lx awd

so sometimes, when i reverse and turn the wheel at the same time (like when i'm backing out of a driveway), usually on an incline, i hear this loud pop/knock/clunk noise come from my front suspension. i guess that its coming from the front drivers side suspension, but cant seem to figure out what it is. it only sounds like that when i reverse and turn the wheel from an incline position. i'd like to know if anyone has run into this problem

i looked up pop/clunk/knock and reverse and all i could come up with was the tsb issued for the caliper on gen2 crv's (mines is a gen1) and the normal clunk associated with first gens. i don't hear the same clunk when i go forward or even when i run over bumps (there is another clunk but that is because of my stabilizer bar links)...it sounds as if a spring is 'popping' into place...its kinda scary...any help appreciated, thanks

You've put your gloves on and done all the 'rocking and yanking tests", have you?

Look at the diagrams at www.slhondaparts.com and see the four bolts that hold the front suspension on. We found a couple were loose on the Wife's Gen 1 V . . . . Maybe you've got that too.

It could be the front sway bar end links. Mine did this at about 80k.

Just a thought but could it be a CV joint going bad?? The backing up with the steering wheel turned makes me think that. Usually an outer boot bad letting the grease out.

stabilizer end links...could be, but there's another noise associated with those that i already figured out previously

cv joints- could be too...anyway i can check other than taking it out? it doesn't do it when turn full lock (left or right) and go forward.

i'll (finally) have time to check the problem this week(end)...pls lemme know of any opinions anyone else might have...it sounds pretty scary and i haven't driven the v much lately

The sway bar end links do not generally make noise unless you hit an unequal bump. ex: One wheel hits the bump, the other doesn't. It is virtually impossible to diagnose them by hand or even visual inspection unless the bushing is hanging out of one or both of them.

thanks for all the help u guys...check it out this past weekend, and it was the lowerball joint...my castle nut was pulled off (not loose, but pulled) of the ball joint thread...dunno how it happened, but i replaced everything and the noise is now gone...now its time for the end stabilizer links...or end link stabilizer...or whatever it is

Glad things worked out for you. I'm glad you had a great dealer experience. I know I love my dealer and I think that makes owning a Honda that much better. Not too hijack the thread, [ rather build on ] When I come to a low speed stop my front end "creaks". Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.
