One very important point about bleeding brake/clutch lines, if you push the pedal all the way to the floor you can permanantly damage the master cylinder. It is designed so that the fluid pressure keeps it from bottoming out, so while bleeding the system do NOT exceed the normal travel. With that said, the spring should be at the top of the pedal. And you would have to remove the pedal attach bolt and the pushrod to the master cylinder. (do not change adjustment on the pushrod) Unless the spring is broken or missing, that may not be the problem.
