I have 2K miles now on my Pilot and it has decided to make creaking noises (brakes) when I back out of the driveway and at the stop sign at the end of my street. (length of 2 houses drive to stop sign)
This only happens in the morning the first time out for the day. What a silly car!

This has been discussed in the past. Some people refer this as "brake thud". It USUALLY happens when you drive your car after parking an extended period, i.e, early in the mornings when you go to work or in the evenings when you go home.

You can read Cat's post regarding this. (http://www.hondasuv.com/main2/viewtopic.php?t=96) My independent Honda mechanic also second to that. It's normal.

Many people are confused this with gas tank sloshing noise although I personally think that they are quite different. Bottom line is that it happens not only to Pilot but many other Honda's (my '92 Prelude, Odyssey, etc.), Nissan's and Toyota's. Like many other people, my ears don't pay attention since I've been hearing for 12 years on my Prelude. It never had brake failure. I replaced the rear brake pads at 180,000 miles, front brake pads and rotors at 200,000 miles. I still hear the brake thud.

Hi chowgirl... is it a creaking sound, thud sound or a screetching sound? I have that screetching sound when I first drive my Pilot in the morning for a few minutes... That is only because the brake pads are cold and needs to expand from the friction of the pads touching the discs....

Know what I mean?

Hope this helps!

I think I have the gas tank sloshing thud sounds nailed LOL...this is different, and seems to come from the front. It sounds like a spook house door, but not squeaky- more like creaky. :P

creaky, huh? try this... First thing in the morning (since you said that's when it happens) push down on your front bumper to see if it will produce that creaking sound you mentioned. Try it in the back also incase it's coming from there...

If the creaking sound is there, it may be something in your suspension... When I had my 99 CRV, it had a creaking sound in the back... I thought it was the door or the glass area, but after awhile (a few months) it started to get REALLY loud... I did that exact test and found that it was coming from the suspension... Honda pointed out that it was my stablizer links in the rear... Got that replaced under warranty...

Good luck chowgirl!

Regarding the "popping" sound when you back out/move forward just after starting the engine. According to Honda, and also many other members of this site, the sound is a design problem having to do with the brake caliper housings (I am over simplifying the description here)moving back and forth when they are cold. The dealership called me last week and said that a "fix" has been designed by Honda and is ready to be installed by the dealer to solve the problem. Honda was receiving many complaints about the noise. My pilot is still under warranty and will be receiving the fix next week. Call your dealer.

Thanks for notice TJMJ1! I should call my dealer too. It also happens on my '92 Prelude and I don't even pay attention any more since I've been hearing it for over 12 years.
