Hello, a friend of mine couldn't remove one of his front lug nuts on his 2006 Element so he brought it to me, I ended up breaking the stud to get the lug nut off. So now I had to replace the stud for him, I removed everything down to the hub and knocked the broken stud out with a hammer, we took the broken stud and a good lug to the store to make sure we got the right parts. When we got back to my house I noticed there was no access to get the new stud in, I figured the hub had to be removed so I unstaked the big nut and took it off but couldn't get the hub off with the tools I had so I ended up "modifying" the brake shield and was able to get the new stud in, I pulled the stud into position using 2 large washers one of the lugs and my impact gun, I cleaned the thread with a tap. re-assembled everything than the Element sat for a few hours. When he went to leave and back out of my driveway it was making a noise like something was rubbing, but it will only make this noise when in reverse. I read on this forum about noises when the E-brake has been applied from the rotor rusting up, and I also read in the CR-V forums about damage to the bearing from not removing the hub when replacing the studs. So anyone ever experience this where there was a noise but only when in reverse?? He's going to pull the wheel tomorrow to change his oil so he will look to see if anything is rubbing.

Also I read on here that you normally would use a slide hammer to remove the hub and the writeup also said to thread the slide hammer into the part that you bolt to the hub and use the threaded part to push the axle in, so when using the slide hammer the idea is to pull the hub off the axle not push the axle in right?

Thanks

A slide hammer to take a bearing hub apart?

Not familiar with that. 'Hammer' and 'bearing' are usually not used in the same sentence, at least not at my house.

All HONDAS are noisy in reverse, but it's not a rubbing sound, just less expensive reverse gears (even in autobox).

Did you try SEARCHING?

Maybe I didn't use the correct part name, I'm referring to removing the part that the studs are pressed into from the axle. I did search as I mentioned in my first post

did you rebend the dust shield? sounds like it might be the culprit. it may be rubbing so it is noisy in one direction, but 'sliding' in the opposite direction so it is not noisy.

The part of the shield that is real thin actually broke putting the stud in and when I put everything back together it was not near any moving parts. May have to cut the shield back to the area that is closer to a screw on each side. My buddy is supposed to be changing his oil today and is going to let me know if he sees anything when he removes the tire. Haven't heard anything from him yet.

I think it is a stupid design that a stud can't be replaced easier than they made this setup, and was surprised that there was not an area where you rotate the hub to have access to a hole or area where the stud could be inserted, never saw anything like this before.
