View Full Version : Change in oil filter diameter

I'm getting all ready for my first oil change on my new 2004 Pilot.

I found some 5-W20 (that wasn't easy) and bought 6 filters from HandA-accessories, link below.

I look at these filters and they are clearly smaller, and indeed HandA mentions that in their site. Has anyone used these smaller diameter filters? I can't imagine how a smaller diameter filter's gasket will line up. I hate to get the old one off and find out the new ones don't fit. Any input greatly appreciated!!!

Filters they sent are part #15400-PLM-A01

Addendum: I found this on the CRV forum, seems they are a little put off as well:

UroTrash,
Yesturday I changed my oil with the Fram-PH7317 Extra Gaurd filter.I had that worry too.
It was obviously smaller and the aluminum flange on the car was visible around the outside of the new filter. The o-ring seemed the same size though.
I test ran it for 20 minutes with no leaking. I also drove it awhile.I think the Fram works just fine.

yeah, they work fine... I'm using the Fram Double Guards and they are in fact smaller than the OEM's but the ORing is of the same diameter... Just as long as the thread shaft fits the oil filter and the Oring makes a good seal, you are ok...

Changed my oil last PM, new filter does indeed work fine but I bet there will be a lot of nasty gunk build up on the "shelf" around the small base. I'll make a mental note to wipe it well next time so no sandy gunk keeps the next filter from seating well.

BTW that 5-W20 seems thin as water! Amazing!!!

Yeah, it's always a good idea to wipe the area where the oil filters seal will sit to ensure a proper seal... Also adding a thin coat of new oil on the new filters seal is important...

But I would stay away from fram filters. I work at a John Deere store and have seen first hand some filter brand comparisons and fram is hands down the worst out there. Maybe their premium line is better but the standard frams "inards" and really really cheap. There was a guy that did some comparisons at another forum. Apparently he had gotten a new shop saw in his garage and for some reason he found his mission was to cut apart a bunch of filters and show pics of the filter pleats and how they attached to the inside of the filter. Also on the ends where the valve can go into relief. You just wouldn't believe how cheap some filters are made and his pics and feeling matched those we saw from Deere's tests. He also rated the frams at the bottom of the food chain. I've been buying my filters from Handi accessories and they really aren't priced bad if you get 4-6 at a time--they're genuine honda at $4-5 ea (I think) and the shipping was darn reasonable.

Thanks for the tip, Kraky... (by the way, welcome to the site!!!)...

Actually, I am aware of the low quality that Fram offers... I've been meaning to purchase some Amsoil filters online, but I haven't got to that yet...

BTW, I've had this site bookmarked for a few years... It might be the same research that you are talking about... It's a full comparison of numerous oil filters available on the market... It's very long and in-depth, but full of really great information...

Enjoy!

At least one person feels the HONDA filters sold in the USA are poor quality, check this link:

I read the Honda filter summaries. His only complaint on the american built filter is the "fuzzy" media. The rest of the filter (especially the relief valve) seems built very very well. My only thought about the media is whether or not this guy really knows if this is a problem or not. He "thinks" it could be a problem but I think he is evaluating off of an "impression" and I would think the filter engineers would be the experts about filtering media. I certainly can't say who is right or wrong but my thoughts are that if they are building quality into the filter everywhere else they probably know what they are doing with the filtering media. I think I feel safe with the honda filters.

If anybody wants the bigger filter just ask your Parts guy at the honda shop for the s2000 filter. That is what I use on my Pilot. You can also use the Passport Fillter made bye Izuzu. The s2000 filter is more money though.

15400-PCX-004 is the part # Retail is around 8.00

If I may ask, what is the Honda oem filter number for the Pilot 3.5 V6 engine?

Ok, you made me go out into the garage and get my spare :) The number on it is 15400-PLM-A02. This is the 'new' smaller filter. I'm probably going to switch back to the larger S2000 units in the future though.
