So im picking up my 99 4wd HRV tomorrow. I was hoping to get a vtec but they are incredibly rare here in Ireland and a bit overpriced. Also got this one at an incredible price.

I was wondering if it is possible to add a vtec chip to give the same performance as a 4wd vtec model. Im guessing that the 4wd parts (driveshaft etc) are the same on both models so adding the extra 20bhp wouldn't break anything.

Is this possible and has anyone tried anything like it?
Thanks

vtec is not just a chip, it's a different cam system.

Ha oh well. Thanks for clearing that up. I probably should have done a bit more reading. My friend suggested it as all the engines we looked at seemed to be pretty much identical.

your friend doesnt sound like a good source for honda engine guidance.

I told him today and even his GF knew what a vtec was. Pretty funny moment. He's worked on Diesel's all his life so he was probably confused by the strange petrol machine in front of him.

So am I right in thinking that increasing the power (through whatever method) would put more/too much strain on the rear drive parts?

As long as you don't exceed the friction capacity of the front tires (don't spin them) your rear end gets virtually ZERO power transferred to it. There's also a safety valve built into the 'pumpkin' to protect it from tight spots and stupid operators, like when your rear wheels suddenly hit a clear patch of dry pavement with the speedometer showing 160 Km/hr.:oops::oops::oops:

A quick search for the phrase 'dual pump Quebec thread' will find you some reading to help you understand how the AWD works.....

Did the HR-V ever have the VTech engine from the factory?
I once had a Civic Aerodeck VTech(basically a Rover 400 estate with Honda running gear) and the engine was mint - also looked alot different to the HR-V's supposedly with VTech engines I've been looking at on eBay UK.

I ask, as the wife's HaRVey is tedious to drive long distances at anything over 50 mph due to engine noise and high revs.

How much of a job is it to retro-fit a 1.6 or 1.8 VTech engine?

No. Only VTec engines...

Heh!

The designation of the factory VTec engine is D16W5 (see my other post on the subject).

You can fit a SOHC VTec head to your engine. Do some research on "Mini-me". Getting the head to fit is only part of it - you need the ECU as well and some wiring etc. The ECU and wiring will also be needed if you simply buy a SOHC VTec engine and fit it (sould be a straight bolt-in swap).

BTW: the VTec engine revs just as much, and if you fit one to your gearbox it will rev exactly the same!

Fitting the B16 / B18 range give "real" VTec but you will need to change gearboxes and will need custom made axles and engine mounts etc etc Lots of info on Honda swaps on the net.
