View Full Version : Brake Pad Movement Within the 2004 Honda Pilot EX Caliper

I have a concern about my 2004 Pilot EX brakes. When I back up and apply brakes and then drive forward, the next time I apply braking I can hear the brake pads "click" back into place. The dealer told me that this is a good thing and that my brakes were designed that way. This is my third Honda and I have performed many disc brake jobs and I have never seen that much play in the brake pads within the calipers. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have the same problem on my 2003 Pilot. I was going to take it in this week for the dealer to look at it. I can't beleive this is the way it should work.

CR-V are the same way. It is normal. They have a fix for it but it's temporary and the click will eventually return.

This is a known issue with the Honda Pilots, 2nd Generation CRV's and I think it also includes the Honda Odesseys too... This exact issue is also on the Acura MDX and they just released a TSB for the MDX's... View the following link for the MDX TSB:

They don't have a TSB for the Pilots, yet, but expect it to come sometime soon...
Hope this helps!
I was informed by my dealer that this is common in Honda brakes due to their design. No flaw, no problem, but will make 'clack'/'clunk' noise when depressing brakes and brake are cold.

Like Red and Cat said, this is a known common problem with Honda's and many of us learned to ignore the noise that only happens when the brake is cold. I'm moving this thread to Clinical Rounds.

I'm moving this thread to Clinical Rounds.I just had this corrected this morning for my 2003 Pilot. It was done at the local dealer under warranty. On 23 March 2004 Honda issued Service Bulletin 04-019 to address the noise generated by the rear brakes as described above. The Service Bulletin instructs the shop to remove the original brake pad shims (three total I think) and replace with a new design that consists of a total of 4 shims. This Bulletin applies to all 2002-2004 Odyssey's, all 2003 Pilots, and some 2004 Pilots. Check it out with your local dealer. The Bulletin suggests the dealer entertain performing this work free of charge for any vehicle affected that may be out of warranty. So ask if in doubt. Good Luck!
