I decided to pursue the brake noise problem I have had since bringing my Pilot home last April.
The service adisor told me that "Honda" said the noise was "normal".

My local advisor told me a TSB has just been released for the Pilot for the same issue.

Clunk From the Rear Brakes
SYMPTOM
The rear brake calipers clunk when you first apply the
brakes after changing the direction of the vehicle.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The outer shims on the rear brake pads do not allow
the pads to slide easily when you press the brake
pedal. This causes the outer pad to hit hard during a
change of direction, resulting in a clunk.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the rear brake pad shims.
NOTE: Brake pad replacement and disc resurfacing is
not needed to get rid of the clunk.

question....I have Honda locks on my wheels. the key is in my trunk, in the original packaging, wrapped in bubble wrap. it did not look disturbed. (I check EVERYthing and basically move out of the car when I leave it with them.)

so do the dealers have a master key or something? I am assuming this has to be the case if they did indeed add the shims.

??

^^^ That's a very good question. The way that the wheel locks are made, I doubt that a master key can be used for all wheel locks, but I may be wrong. You should ask the dealer if they actually did the work.

My dealer changed the break shim at 15,000 miles service for free in june 2004 (eventhough they kept telling me the noise was normal over the phone and in person) until I told them the SHIM Pads

There's a few different kinds of locks, and technicians at Honda dealers have the master sets. I know, I forgot my key once. But it's ALWAYS a good idea for to double check the work with them.

rogert,
I need some clarification about the Brake TSB. Under SYMPTOM, it is mentioned that "the rear brake calipers clunk when you first apply the
brakes AFTER changing the direction of the vehicle". Shouldn't this be BEFORE? Or is it brake, change direction, brake again and then the clunk is heard. I am trying to reproduce the clunking on my 2003 EXL according to the report but no success. I do hear a loud clunk though when I am parked on an incline surface, facing up, I step on the brake and shift from Park to Drive or Reverse. Do you know if this can be fixed by the Brake TSB? Thanks for your opinion.
