View Full Version : crv practical ?

so im thinking of purchasing another vehcile. my current vehicle gets about 9-10 mpg if im lucky combined freeway and street driving. living in california gasoline prices are really high. however with my truck snow, mud, dirt, center dividers, small cars, and most terrain are of no problem. that is a feature i like.

i know the crv doesn't have the raw torque that my v8 currently has, but i like that it is small and agile, and with my expereince of driving one on the road i found it to be very peppy. i have alwas been a supporter of honda products.

my concerns before purchasing are, that i have not driven the "V" off the road before.

1)Does the AWD have limited slip or is it fully locking ?
2)Does it handle well in sand?
3)Does it handle well in snow w/ and w/o ice?
4)How is the gas mileage?
5)Good passing power 40 mph to 70 mph and 65 mph to 75 mph?
6)Will it tip on a fast u turn?
7)Are there after market suspension products for it, such as lifts and off road shocks?
8) How are the cup holders?
9) Is it a fun cruising car and can i pick up on chicks with it? (sorry for the immaturity 22 years old with a 17 yearold mind)

If you could elaborate on these question, it would help me better decide. Also if you could tell me something that would make me want to buy one.

thanks again.

Hello another_requiem, I'll have you know they have great cup holders.

They are great in snow storms, cause the system only kicks in when it detects wheel slippage, and front wheel drive the rest of the time, which as most people know is best for driving on-road in storms. Off-road, they lack torque, but have good ground clearance, and are as you mentioned pretty peppy. Some members have gone with a 2" lift, and seem to be quite content with it. Myself I installed a taller tire wich gave me almost another inch of lift.

They are fun off-roading, but really can't do much rock clawling as it is not heavy duty enough for this task, as you would be used to with your true 4x4. It does not have a low gear, so climbing big hills can be a challenge. Great gas mileage, considered one of the best in SUV categories.

Myself I haven't done any sand treks, but in mud it does an admiral job.
The AWD system only kicks in when the front wheels detect slippage, then the power goes to the rears temporarely, and then returns to FWD.

It does not tip easy, but of course, putting on a lift kit will increase the odds of it tipping. Did I mention it's great on gas? Needs more torque!

I find that more women prefer this type of vehicle than men, as some of my friends joke with me about this. I get the last laugh when I pass them at the gas station. The compliments I get are usually from women saying how nice it looks. :?

Unfortunetly, it's not the greatest vehicle for passing at highway speeds, but not a slouch either. Take one out for a test drive and see for yourself if it's good enough on the highway. That's were you see the difference compared to a V8.

Check out my dirty pictures in "my gallery" or other members, to see how crazy some people really are with their V's. 8)

Happy motoring!

is that true for left and right tire ? does the left side compensate for the right side, lets say i accidently got the right side up in the air with only the front left tire touching will that tire spin by itself or will the other side spin too ?

No, it's not a HUMMER, just a Japanese mini-UTE. If one front wheel starts to slip, it will transfer almost 50% of it's power to the rear wheels. If either rear wheel is ALSO off the ground / slipping, it will spin too. :-(

It's not the answer to all problems, but a darn good solution to icy streets in Edmonton, Alberta. :-)

Somehow I think a (their words) 22 year old with a 17 year old mind moving from a Ram 1500 to a CR-V won't be the smoothest transition. But give it a shot, Honda has good resale value if you change your mind.

Hello another_requiem,
there are some members here who have taken their V's on the beach - you'll have to use the search function for that.

3) handles very well in snow, ice and mud (here in the Northeast)
4) mileage - great - 22-23 mixed driving up to 26.8mpg highway on a recent long trip
5) good passing power in both categories for me. Although I had an older Accord prev - so my engine power has increased with this vehicle.
6) possibility to tip as being an suv - I slow it down around some sharp curves here (also to avoid deer that might be lurking)
7) lots of good information/members on this site that can help you there
9) seems like a possibility - I see a lot of men driving V's around here. Could be family guys or singles. This small suv isn't as cutsie as some of the other small suv's - so it is up to you. Some mods can change the character a bit. :)

Are you going to keep the Dodge and then purchase another more fuel efficient vehicle? or are you replacing the Dodge completely

thanks for the input, yes i will be keeping the truck. im leaning more towards acquring one with all the input. i really like the cab room it seems very spatious. with my commute the gas mileage is heaven sent. i drive 17 miles one way but it takes me 1.5 hours. the truck is not practical. i like to go camping it seems like it will provide amble room for stuff in the back.

so im pretty much sold on the vehcile. has anyone experienced any problems with there V. is it hard to work on ?

u ain't gonna pick up chicks with the CR-V...better chance doing that in your RAM

new cr-v has descent torque and good gas mileage..4wd is not limted slip

a lot of storage compartments and from what I know it has 6 cupholders in a 5 passenger car....at least for the old cr-vs

MPG is 22/26 on an auto tranny I recall

Vigor25 Chicks dig my CR-V. In fact I took my V to the dealer 2day to balance the tires and the dealer told me that it the 'tightest V he has seen come thru there'. No the V is not a chick magnet especially the EX and LX models. But the SE version can be if you do it right

For the most part, like everyone else said, the CR-V is nearly perfect for your commute and life style. Considering this:

I have owned a used '98 CR-V since 2000, it's now has 160K miles on it without any major repair.

It's great on gas...oh man, I love all the space it has, the handling, and the appearance.

Performs well in snow, off road a few times during the winter in the Sierra mountains (Reno, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite....).

On sand, due to its light weight, we had lots of fun. Use the search funtion to find all crazy pictures hondasuv members have done in Pismo Beach, Calif. I have been there 3-4 times so far with the CR-V.

The 2nd gen is better on every dimention. As far as chick getting, I actually have no comments on that part since I am mid 20s with a 30s mind so...well, my gf likes both SUVs that I have.

I could relate to your Ram1500 with my 4runner. I do own a 2000 Limited 4WD 4runner. Guess what, I still like the CR-V better for my daily commute and long trips. I only use the 4runner occationally during the weekend and/or towing. The CR-V handles way better, it's easier and more fun to drive, and above all, it gets a lot better MPG (16-19 on the 4runner) compare to 21-24 on the CR-V.

The CR-V is very easy to work on (1st gen), simple, parts are plenty, and tons of knowledgeble folks here to help out.

Good luck in choosing,

Namcali

Well if you ever actually do manage to pick up a "chick," you'll be glad to know that the front seats fold down flat. Of course, that opens up the possibility of having to choose the right infant seat if 17 year old minds still work the way they used to.

i have a 02 2WD, my fishing vehicle :)

2)Does it handle well in sand? it handles ok, not too well in mud (tires)
4)How is the gas mileage? 22-24mpg combined highway and city driving
5)Good passing power? quite good
6)Will it tip on a fast u turn? nope

i've got a buddy with a V10 dodge. gets 8-10mpg. lots of HP and torque

i've got another buddy that traded his V8 dodge for a Montero. he said the gas bill was killing him.

another_requiem, welcome to HondaSUV.com

Cool, somebody with a Ram looking at a CR-V. I've got a CR-V and am looking at buying a Ram (replacing my Nissan pickup).

Honda's RT4WD system is unlike anything you're familliar with. It works hydraulically. There's no electronics involved. It will never be a serious offroader like a modified jeep or such. Having said that, it's capable of doing everthing you ask of it as long as you're not into rock crawling.

(look for the link in my post to the tech article describing how the RT4WD works)

Besides all the stuff you've read by now check this out too. Its not big V8 truck, but it holds its own for an overgrown civic. Just check out the Paragon section and especially page 7 for the picks. Then again I'm biased and I love my over grown civic.

After seeing $150+ in gas bill in less then one month, I traded in my 2002 V8 Dodge for a 2003 CRV. I usually don't haul anything heavy, so the truck is too bouncy over road bumps. The CRV has been a much smoother & comfortable ride. I do missed the 4 wheel ABS on my ex-truck though.
