Wow.. I'm on crack - I had i-tunes going, and for some reason the youtube player was on mute, so when I turned up the volume on the computer, I watched the whole thing set to "Milkman" by the Aphex Twins and kept thinking "this is a really wierd song for a rally racing video" Nice Job!
You guys should check to see if there are any autosports clubs in your area and see if they ever run Navigational or TDS (time/distance/speed) rallies. They are run on public roads and test you and your co-driver's navigational and driving abilities. I've been filling my summer schedule with the dates of all the ones in my area. They're a blast to particiapte in, and you don't need a hopped up rally car- any street car can be used.
The idea is they give you a list of directions as you start. Cars leave in intervals. The object is that if you follow the directions perfectly, you will arrive at the hidden checkpoints "on time". You start with a number of points, and you loose points for arriving early or late at a checkpoint.
The catch is that this all takes place on tiny backroads which are usually dirt, and you can get lost in a hurry. The directions are often written as puzzles or code that you and your navigator must decipher enroute. Distances for each section of the route are given. In order to stay on-time, you must maintain a written average speed or complete each step of the directions in a written time. It gets fun when the directions state that you must maintain an average speed of 80km/h on a tiny dirt backroad, so you must slow down for corners and stops but then re-establish your average speed inbetween. If you get lost, lets hope you have a fast car!
The directions are however written in such a way as to not endanger the teams or force them to exceed speedlimits or violate any traffic laws. The driving is at the discretion of the driver though.

Wow! That sounds like a blast! It would be fun to participate in one of those events. I think I'd rather be the driver instead of the navigator. I'm terrible with spoken driving directions (but I know how to read a map).

I think a rally would be fun but I imagine they have to do quite a bit of bracing to keep the unit body from warping all over.

They don't move too much. They've got harnesses on. :)

Thanks! Yeah, most of those rally cars have roll cages.

yes, fully welded (usually chromoly) tubing which is welded to the unit body in several places, effectively making the frame extremely stiff as well as being safer for the occupants
nice soundtrack :)
