What are the after-purchase downsides of buying from a non-local dealer?

For example:

If I notice some small detail wrong after taking possession of the car, will another dealer repair it?

Like.. gosh, i don't know... a place where the leather or fabric is pulled out from where it attaches.

Any other potential downsides except for the trip out and back?

Yes they will fix it. We have bought a new car in Alaska and a Cali dealer fixed it. We bought a new car in Cali and a North Carolina dealer fixed it. It is no biggie. The only nice thing is that when you make an appointment where you bought the car you are already in the computer. If not it takes 5 minutes to fill it all out...

No worries here, bought ours in Wisconsin and the dealership down here in KC was more than happy to help out with some minor details. Plus the nice thing is our local shop does a nice job of washing\vacuuming the car when you get service. Oh...and fresh KRISPY KREME doughnuts in the service area; not that it would make a difference to me mind you...

If you buy in one state, and have it delivered to another state, can you avoid taxes on the vehicle?

Does the state where it's delivered too charge sales tax?

If yes, than no, you still have to pay the tax, usually when you register it.

However, if one dealer promised u something like fog light and didnt put them in, another dealer is not going to do it for you for free. Free oil changes offerd by some dealers is not dealer transfereable. However, Thinking as a dealer and a human being if U bought your car from Out of town Honda and another person bought their car from me, Who do u think is getting better treatment and response. Who do think is getting 1st appointment?

I disagree. My CR-V has only been back to the dealer where I bought it once, and that was to have some accessories installed that were purchased with the CR-V but weren't in stock when I picked up the CR-V. The Honda dealer is on the north side of Indianapolis, so it's no farther than Indy Honda or Honda West noted below...

My CR-V has been serviced by three different Honda dealers now.

One was absolutely outstanding, and I would recommend it to anyone in Western New York - Ontario Honda in Canandaigua. They even loan you a free vehicle to drive if your Honda has to be in for service the entire day, or multiple days. Older used Hondas, but still - a free loaner. Good prices, too.

Indy Honda on the south side of Indianapolis is okay, but too often I had to argue with the service writers about things I did not want done when I brought my CR-V in for service. They always tried to push their 'service packages'.

Honda West on West 38th street in Indianapolis. This is where my CR-V goes now, and while they do recommend service items not listed on the maintenance schedule, they are also good about saying "Okay, no problem" when I don't want them done. And they also remind me about things I may not have remembered...like the last time I was in reminding me I was due for a 'tune up' soon. This is probably where I'll buy my next Honda.

I hope that is not the case. I tried to purchase from my local dealer, but they held true to their reputation of not budging from MSRP, and I had to go with the out of town dealer that saved me $1100.
If you were to have appointment and/or treatment issue, I think contacting American Honda would get some positive results.

Both of mine are from 800 miles away, and I have had no trouble with any dealer service.

If you buy in one state, and have it delivered to another state, can you avoid taxes on the vehicle?

My parents were winter Texans (legal residents of Texas) but May through September in Minnesota. They had to replace a car in Mankato, and bought one there. The dealer contacted the Texas [Secretary of State, I think] and handled everything -- Texas taxes, registration, plate transfer, etc. even though the transaction took place in Minnesota. All dealers know how to do this.

Several years ago my son was a manager for a nationwide retail chain, and periodically some customer would buy something in a Milwaukee store but process the taxes etc as an Iowa (or whatever state) resident. Unusual, but legal -- and actually more proper, although a PITA for the store.
