No, it doesn't alert to too high of a pressure, that's what the butt-dyno would notice - a really harsh ride. :lol:

I had a simple day of nothing to do today. So, I was on a roll. I read thru all of the Honda Service News reports from 1/99 to 4/2007 and posted a bunch of findings hoping to help some people out and dispel some myths at the same time! :lol: :lol: :lol:

After owning my V for a couple of weeks, the TPMS light came on. I was at the dealer to pick up my new plates anyway, so I asked them to take a look at it.

The service guy said the pressure was too high on one tire and that's why the light was on. He let some air out and the light went away.

Not sure if this was the truth or if he was feeding me a line.

According to the Honda service manual for 2007:
The TPMS sensors inside the wheels, will trip when the tire pressure goes below 24psi. But you must get above 48km/hr (30mph) (I guess this is for the centrifugal switch in the sensors to activate the sensor to come out of sleep mode). That is provided you had not driven the car for the previous 5 minutes or more. Sleep mode is so that the battery life is extended. That is how I understand it. If the tire pressure is above 24 psi even MUCH higher then it will do nothing to trip TPMS the system. Remember: accurate tire pressure can only be measured when the tire is stone cold. Do NOT remove air if it measures higher after running the car. Air expands with heat and will give a false reading. Remember Boyles Law on gases/ temperature?

Correct to a degree. The higher pressure you start with in your tire, the less it will go up as the temp rises. Air acts as a coolant in your tire and heat is the enemy for long tire life.

For example - start at 26 cold it may rise to 32 hot
start at 32 cold it may rise to 34 hot

I know, I read the manual too. But none of these situations applied to me. . .which is why I posted here. It was unusual behavior.

One day I was driving and the TPMS light came on. So I figured that maybe it was because the tires were hot from driving. So when I got home, I let it sit overnight. The next morning it was pretty cold outside (this was early Feb.) and the tires were at 30 psi -- exactly what they should have been. I turned on the car and the TPMS light immediately came one -- no biggie I thought, it just needs to reset itself. So I went for a 30 min drive, ran some errands, etc. Light never went away. The last errand I ran was to go pick up my plates from the dealer. . and since the light was still on I had them check it. Of course the tires were warm by now, but the guy said that they were overinflated, which is why the light was on. But this is why it seems like BS to me -- tires were perfectly inflated when they were cold, as they are supposed to be, so the sensor should not trip when the psi rises when the air is warm. But according to the dealer, this is exactly what happened.

As an aside, I want to make sure we're talking about the actual TPMS light, not the "low tire pressure" light, correct?

I also had an incident this past weekend where the low tire pressure light came on. After driving home and letting it sit overnight again, I checked the pressure one all four tires. . .two were 30psi and the other two were 29. I added a tiny bit of air to the 29's, bringing them up to 30. The light then went away.

Clearly something isn't right. . .the low tire pressure light should not come on when it's only down 1 psi. Even the manual says the light only comes on when "tire pressure is extremely low". And 29psi is not "extremely" low. If it's supposed to trip at 24psi, well that makes more sense.

My whole experience with this leads me to believe that the TPMS on my V is less than reliable and has a few bugs that need working out.

I just read your thread in the other forum about your adventures with your TPMS light. Although the issues I have are "resolved", my story sounds eerily similar to yours. Like I said, I experienced behavior that outright contradicted what the manual stated.

My TPMS light came on Saturday, no warning at all, no low pressure indicator, straight to to the orange "TPMS" staring at me in the dash. I checked the pressure in the tires when they were cool later that evening, all were at 30 or 31lbs. I took my V to the dealer this morning. They said my TPMS system had every failure code in the book...whatever that means. The service advisor said it was like someone aimed a radar jammer at it:?: :roll: . They reset it....so we shall see what happens next. Hopefully they fixed it.

Mine hasn't come back on again, but I still worry that it might again, one day. The whole thing has just been strange.

This is the No. 1 item that I wish my V didn't come with. And it's all because of those few people whose sheer negligence in checking their tires before driving away which in turn got them into an accident. Then a ton of lawsuits eventually followed.

With all the experiences you're all sharing with in this forum, it seems like it's becoming more of a nuisance rather than a safety device to aid us. Luckily I don't have any problems (yet) with my TPMS but no one can tell when it's going to make its grand appearance either as a true warning or a nuisance. It's electronics and RF and it's bound to fail somewhere somehow. And having it reset by the dealer will at least cost you your personal time. Buying the scan tool to DIY it is still expensive at this time so this to me is more of a pain. I take great pains to maintain our two cars and that includes knowing what's the PSI of each car's 4 tires at any given time. At least I should be spared with these troubles by offering this as an option to me which I would gladly decline.

I know, I know, it's a federal mandate by now here in the US so I just have to grin and live with it. :(

My service advisor called me about 9:00am this morning. I took it back at 11:00am, they've had it all day. It's time for me to go home, I've been at work since 6:00am and I can't reach my service advisor:evil: . Luckily I can walk to the dealership in about 10 minutes from where I work. I may take a hike over there anytime now:roll:

Update: My service advisor called right after I posted. Apparently their HDS broke when they were working on my V so it's still not fixed. He said they hope to have the HDS fixed tomorrow and would give me call. Maybe the third time is the charm...but this is definitely getting old!!!

Well, Honda has my V again today. They called at 10:30am and had it by 10:45am. Claim their HDS is now working. Just happened that the Service Director walked by and said hi, what are you doing here? He's a really nice guy, we've had dealings in the past and knows me by name. My service advisor turned red as a beet when he said she's been here three days in a row for her TPMS light. You should have seen the look on the Service Director's face, it was priceless. He asked how I was getting here in the evenings after the work was "done":roll: , I said I was walking from work, he said go pick her up today:lol: . They always bring to back to work after you take it in, but getting back to the dealership is up to you. Hopefully the third time is the charm:rolleyes: The courtesy driver told me to make sure and ask for compenstion since this is the third day in a row I've had to take it in for the same problem, so I'm gonna see what freebies I can get out of them for my time and trouble....hmmmmm:?:

Another update: The Service Director came and picked me up from work on Friday. My TPMS is still not working. According to him they tried to re-initialize the sensors in the tires, reset the system, etc several times. It was still showing all sorts of malfunction codes. They ordered a new TPMS contol unit that should be in the middle of next week. The Service Director apologized for all the trips I've had to make and offered to come pick up my V and bring it back to me next week when the part comes in. He also said that the TPMS's in the new CRV's, Ridgeline's and Odyssey's have been giving them lots of problems:roll:

Took my 07 back today, they called late yesterday, the part was in. The service advisor just called and said my TPMS is fixed. He's sure this time:rolleyes: Hopefully they have solved the problem, maybe the 4th time is the charm:roll:

Interesting conversation with Honolulu Pflueger Honda Service Dept. today. I bought a 2007 CR-V in March. It has only a couple of thousand miles since it is only being driven by my college age daughter to school.

I have read many of the postings ( > 6000) about the oversensitive TPMS, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, on the CRV. The vast majority of the problems were fixed simply by putting in the right pressure. Some of you had to have the dealer "reset" the system. (In reality it should be "set" the system not "reset", because it is something according to the Dearer Service Bulletin, that is supposed to be done before delivery.) The set-up varies depending on local conditions like altitude etc. All of you have indicated that this was done under warranty because after all we are talking about 2007 vehicles.

Here is something you will find interesting. The folks at the Pflueger Honda Service Department suggested to my automotively naive daughter that this TPMS issue was HER FAULT! They assumed that she was "driving around for months" with low pressure therefore it would "require them to reset the system" and that it wouldn't be covered under warranty since it was "HER FAULT!?!?!" After I got on the phone with them they said this: "You have to understand Honda's position. If she drives around for months ignoring the light...it won't clear automatically even when you put the right pressure in the tires...so it isn't our fault that we need to reset it". Huh? That makes no sense at all. I own also own a Lexus GX470 and Mercedes ML350 they both have TPMS. When you top-off the pressure...the light goes off, end of story.

First things first: This issue came to light the week before she flew to Maui for a week of vacation. Second, When the light came on...her cousin checked the pressure of all 4 tires and found that they were within spec. So, a grand total of 12 days have gone by since the light went on. And of those 12 days, she was on another island for 7 days. She brought the car in to Pflueger Honda today, three days after returning to Oahu. Third, according to the many thousands of postings on this site, most of your Honda dealerships admitted this was a recurrent problem with the new CR-V and none of YOU were blamed for the problem. Fourth, they said that they were going to charge my daughter $40-$50 dollars to reset the system.

How fair does that sound? The vehicle is under warranty! They are making a huge....and INCORRECT assumption that my daughter was "ignoring the light".

I will post again to let you know how they finally resolved the issue. In fairness to them....the service people I spoke with were polite even though I was getting annoyed with them. I hate the idea that before even checking the tire pressure...they were already telling my daughter that she would have to pay for a system reset if in fact that is what they had to do.

The skeptic in me has to ask this question: "How do you even prove that you reset the system?"

As I said, I will let you all know how this pans out. I am already designing a website that will pop-up whenenver you search on "Pflueger Honda" describing in fair and accurate detail how things go with this dealership when dealing with issues. I hope they do right thing.

TPMS is Tire Pressure Monitoring System, triangle is for the VSA.

Your manual tells you, please read your manual...

WTH is the Horseshoe?!? :?

I never liked TPMS from day one and the more I read the more I hate it. Wonder if other vehicles have as many problems.

As a matter of fact, our next door neighbor called me over because his brand new Buick Lucerne had its TPMS light on. It said one tire was low, so he asked if I could fill it with my air tank. I checked it, and it was fine by what the door sticker said, so I pumped it up slightly to see if the light would go out. No, it got stuck in the re-calibrate mode. I tried to follow the procedure from the owner's manual (it was 3 pages long!!), but it wouldn't work. So, I pumped all his tires up to what the door sticker says, and suggested he make use of his dealer's warranty service. He was cursing the TPMS system and thought it was the most ridiculous thing. I couldn't agree with him more.

Given what I've read about Honda's TPMS system, I think that's a warning light I would seriously consider unplugging if it malfunctions, since I check my tires religiously anyway. Hopefully car inspections don't get to the point of treating the TPMS light the same way they treat the "check engine" light. "Uh oh, your TPMS light is on, so we can't pass your vehicle even though your tires pressures are fine". What a joke.

There are two lights--the TPMS and the little horseshoe thing immediately to the right of the TPMS light. The horseshoe is yellow and looks like two curved tire sidewalls with a squiggly bottom and an exclamation point inside, right?

The two lights report two different things, according to my Quick Start Guide/manual. The TPMS light indicates a "malfunction" that needs a dealer inspection. The horseshoe is called the "low tire pressure indicator" light--the guide says it means "one or more of the vehicle's tires are unacceptably low."

So it sounds like you just have a low tire or two, Mike. :-P

That's the one! I was getting confused because there is a separate TPMS, and I thought that was the only thing related to the tires. The tires appear to be well inflated, but I'll have a look.

You're talking about one of the many lovely yellowish orange warning lights

TPMS = Fault with TPMS system, VSA = ON, take to dealer, potential bad sensor or other electronic issue

Horseshoe shaped = Low tire pressure light, VSA = last state, check your tire pressures, potential flat or puncture

triangle = VSA off or engaged, you have either turned the VSA system off manually, or are driving to the car's limits. if the latter, slow down. if the former, have fun off road!
