I have recently contacted several Honda dealers in Florida with this request- "I would like an OTD quote for a 2007 Honda CR-V 2WD EX, Whistler Silver Metallic with black interior, fog lights, front splash guards, and door visors." After beating around the bush with one dealer in particular, as to how he would need to contact me in order "...to confirm all specifications, such as exact options and colors", I emailed him again to confirm all of the needed information was in the orignial email. I then received the following email that you might find interesting.
Polly,
I don't have any information on you and you want me to send you all my information. I don't know what county or city you live in whether you need a new tag or transfer. If i'm going to be doing all of this work for you i want to know that i have a legitimate shot at selling a car.

Has anyone had similiar responses? Why would I waste my time contacting dealers if I didn't want to buy a car?

I would reply to him.
"Why would I be asking you for quotes if I weren't serious about buying a ___________ with _________. I strongly suggest you respond with a price quote, or I will look elsewhere if you don't think I am worth your precious time.
Thank you for your time."
That is rediculous. Before I do all this work???? He clicks a few buttons on a computer.

I did reply, with the following--
"Thank you.
I will gladly forward your respond to other potential CR-V buyers at http://www.hondasuv.com"
I have since had no responses from him. Maybe he will think next time before he clicks "send."

When I was doing my online shopping, dealers quickly fell into two camps: there were those who took online sales seriously, and responded with an exact price quote and "call me if you want to order a car or arrange a test drive"; and then there were the "call me to get my price" or "tell me your best price because we won't be undersold" dealers.
I ignored the second group and ended up with a great price from one of the "serious" dealerships.
You sound like a smart shopper, so I hope there's a serious dealership out there that wants to earn your business!

I went to a Coggin dealer too except it was the one in Orlando, not DeLand. They're definitely pathetic when it comes to negotiations and I won't ever buy a car from there anymore. It seems like yours is no different. I'm sure they'd love to charge you an overwhelmingly, rediculous documentation fee of $595 as well. Funny thing is, they have that number already printed in bold on every sales sheet so you cannot lower it. Stay away from Coggin!!!

I did have one dealer who I contacted (I believe this one was through CarPerks) that basically said "Are you going to just use me to negotiate with a closer dealer or are you going to seriously consider my offer?" They made an offer in line with most of the other offers I received.
