View Full Version : Strange sensors under headlights?

Hi folks,
Just noticed some odd sensors under the headlights of my new HR-V - pictures attached. One picture is a close up of the sensor, the other a wider picture showing the red cable leading off it, which then just comes to an abrupt halt. There are two on each side, symmetrically placed. Anybody any ideas what they're for?

Just how 'new' is your new HR-V, and what country are you in?
If there had been just one of them, I'd have thought it was a temp sensor, but it looks more like some kind of LED running lights or hazard lights.
Have you tried turning on everything you can think of and look at it after dark?

to me, they look like LEDs :?

Didn't come with the car, that's for sure.
judging by the headlights its gen 1 so it cant be 'new'
what i find weird is why the cables run to 'an abrupt halt'
if its some sensor system- theyd take the 'sensors' off together with the rest of the installation
if it was led lights - why cut the cables?

Very easy way to check this, Get yourself a c or d sized battery.
Place the red wire on the positive side and find the wire which goes to the led's and place that on the negative side. If nothing happens then switch the polarity around, ie +=- -=+.
I will almost bet dollars to donuts that they are in fact led's...
Using a battery instead of 12v will stop you shorting anything................:D just to be safe..

Well there's some ideas to get me going - thanks. This is a 2002 UK HR-V, but not the new model.
The picture isn't very revealing - they actually seem to have semiconductor connection strips in a repeating L shape within them, that's why I think they must be sensors rather than LEDs (I used to be an electronic engineer many moons ago).
I'll take it into Honda soon - maybe they'll know!

Id say Laser/Radar jammer kinda gizmo OR some kinda gate/door opener ( but they are usually placed UNDER the car to interact with sensor loops)
... Laser/Radar jammer kinda gizmo ...
I'm with you on this...

Well I've just been to Honda, and the guy there reckoned they were parking sensors, so the mystery continues. The first owner was a lady apparently (the guy I bought it off didn't know what they were for) so I'm thinking maybe she had a tight garage and they were to help here get in in? Strange.
My first experience with a Honda garage went down well. Someone smashed my wing mirror last night, so I went it to get a replacement and the nice guy down at the shop had a dig around and found an old Civic one that wasn't needed anymore. It fitted perfectly on the HR-V, and he charged me ... wait for it ... absolutely nothing! Now that's what I call service. Seems there are hidden benefits to owning an HR-V. I'm sure people are nicer to you at juntions too!
Time for me to start using the fold-in mirrors I reckon - living in Devon is lovely, but it has it's drawbacks with these narrow lanes ...
parking sensors with such limited 'visibility'?
and why two on each side and so close to each other?
and where is the rest of the installation?
i think the mystery could be resolved from there - whats that installation that was worth removing
but those two thingies connected to it were not
maybe leds connected to a fancy audio equipment?

im with the led theory, the sort they sell to install under handles etc

being an ex pt cruiser owner and having one with hundreds off LED's on it i can say they look like LEd's. But i might be wrong, follow the wiring find out where it goes it must end somewere. if as you say they come to an abrupt halt no harm in giving the wire some power and see if they light up.
