View Full Version : Frequent aroma of gasoline

Hi,
I keep my new 2004 Pilot (about 7 weeks old) in my enclosed garage.
I have frequently noticed the smell of gasoline when I first enter the garage. There does not seem to be any fluid on the floor of the garage, so I don't think there is a gas leak.
I have read on this board about faulty EGR valves. Could this cause such a pungent smell of gasoline? Could this valve go faulty in only 7 weeks??
I am concerned about safety, but the odor is also making it's way upstairs into my bedroom and is very unpleasant.
Any help would be appreciated....

Hmmm.... This is the first that I've heard about this problem... I also keep my Pilot in the garage, but I've never smelt any gas odors upon walking in...
Question... Do you fill up the Pilot to the Max? Do you top it up just to even out the dollar amount? Just so that you know, it is not recommended to fill right up to the top... There should be enough room so that the gas can expand... I think that if there is too much gas vapour pressure build up inside the gas tank, it will release that pressure into the air... But I'm not exactly sure on the truth to that...
My suggestion is to bring this up to your Honda Dealer so that they can troubleshoot this problem for you...
Good luck!

I've been driving my Pilot for over a year and don't have the EGR problem, nor got the smell of gas in the garage. Although I'm not sure, I doubt that gas smell is related to the EGR problem. What Red said makes sense. Also, do you happen to keep gasoline in the garage? Even maybe your lawn mower, gas trimmer, etc???
Please keep us posted.

Wow, thanks for the welcome -- what a friendly forum! I don't have a picture yet :( I got the LX with Navigation system. I'm loving it so far!
Thank you for your responses. I live in NJ, where it is illegal to pump your own gas. Therefore I can't vouch as to how full the attendant fills the gas tank when I get fuel. It's possible that they are "topping off' the tank--
Has anyone here topped off their tank and noticed an odor of gas?
I do not keep gasoline in the garage, so unfortunately, it leaves the Pilot as the only suspect.
Thanks once again for the fast responses....

Have you tried a sniff test? Open the garage and sniff the Pilot like a drug dog would.
Our leaf blower (Craftsman) has a bad design for the gasoline cap, and our garage had that fresh gasoline smell...I removed it. Are you sure it's the Pilot?
Perhaps giving the gas station attendant a max dollar amount that is a little under what you usually pay would eliminate the topping-off possibility.
Keep us posted...

Really!!! That's the first I've heard of that!!! Why is that??? Are there any other states that have this law???

I'm not sure what the reason is... I'm also not aware of any other states with this law.
I do know that NJ gas prices are significantly cheaper then NY's. You would think having an attendant pump your gas would be the more expensive option, but in fact, it's the opposite!

(sorry, DH works for ATT and I couldn't resist!) :P
maybe there were too many runaway without paying types and they passed that law??

i feel your pain about new jersey and the gas thing. my brother was stationed there for a few years, and it was pretty weird when i visited. he said the reason behind it was to save gas....because apparently there was too much spilling going on?? i don't know...it's more like jersey doesn't think it's population is smart enough to operate a gas pump.

Just a quick update for anyone following this story;
Yesterday I stopped into my local dealership where I bought the car and described the problem. They said this was the first they've ever heard of such a thing. They gave the car an inspection (which took about an hour) and came back and told me they found nothing wrong....
Last night, no gas smell.... I'll keep sniffin' though and get back to y'all.

Unfortunately, no updates. I still smell gas once in a while, but it doesn't seem as frequently as before. Unless I'm just dizzy from all the fumes!
