Hello,

I am having another problem with my Honda pilot. One day a month ago my Pilot was driving odd. The shifts became very hard. When the car was at a stop the rpms where 1500 to 2000 and not at below 1000 where they tend to be at a stop. When I release the brake the pilot would surge forward. I was driving for an hour and it went away. Towards the end of my trip at a traffic light, I turned and the pilot stalled in the intersection. It started back up and a drove fine the rest of the day. I took it to my Honda dealer, which like normal they said "we could not reperduce the problem." I decide to just keep driving it. The pilot drove fine for a month, but now the other day it started drive funny again. It was again trying to excel at stop. I drove it home where I parked it. In park before shutting it off it start to surge the rpms. It was acting like I was stepping on the accelerator. It kept doing it, surging to 3000 rpms with me doing nothing. I drove straight to the Honda dealer. I got it back with the normal response that they could not find anything. After getting back it was driving normal. In a parking lot later that day it stalled in a turn. Again it started back up. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem. It does not seem common like other pilot problems.

Does anyone know where to take a Honda pilot where they would fit it? It seems that my Honda dealer is only interested in changing oil.

An intermittent problem that can't be duplicated is kinda tough to fix. What do you expect them to do? Replace the entire vehicle one part at a time?
You didn't list what year or mileage you have either.
Is the floor mat pushing on the gas pedal? It is possible that it is a dirty throttle body issue as well.

Without knowing your mileage, or age of the vehicle, or location (under 3' of snow?) it's very hard to picture your vehicle. Have you at least cracked the owner's manual and opened the hood to verify that there's oil and coolant in sufficient quantities?? (and don't expect the dealer to do that, that's not what you complained about) :-(

To learn more about the owner's manual, have a laugh at this post:

Not sure if a malfunctioning EGR valve will cause something like that from happening, might wanna check into that.

Ok here is an update on my Pilot

1st off, for your information my Pilot is a 2003 with 66,000 miles and it lives in Georgia.

The pilot is currently getting a new C.V. joint under warranty because the old one went bad. While it was there, I told the dealer that the car stalled again. The next day they told me that the car started to do the surging rpm thing. They say that the throttle body is bad and will have to be replace. Unlike the C.V. joint, the throttle body is not under warranty. They are charging $450. I hope that this fixes the car, but to be honest I don’t know what to think. This Pilot has had about 5 things break on it this year alone. When the car works I love it. But it is no Honda (I can only speak for mine pilot). I had a1997 Honda Accord for 7 years and had less problems with it than this car in the 2 years I had it. I sure hope that Honda will address the problems with the pilot and make it as good as all the Hondas that brought us to Honda in the 1st place. As for Now I am just glad they found something with and. I also like to thank all the people of this site who have help me with problems I have had with my pilot in the past. This site has help ton!

You could always call Honda corp. (the #'s in your good ole' owner's manual). Just explain you are a loyal Honda owner since whenever and have had so many Hondas and ask if they could help with this problem. Even though you're way over the warranty miles they may help, even if it's only parts and you pay labor. The worse they can do is say no. Good luck and I hope this fixes it for you.

SEARCH all the threads about (supposedly) failed throttle bodies in ALL the forums. It might give you some ammo for dealing with Honda Corporate.

Keep us up to date . . .

The dealer should not charge you for the throttle body replacement!
Show them a copy of TSB 04-063.

I had the same exact annoying throttle surges and sticking gas pedal before and the dealer replaced the throttle body and gasket on my second visit after showing them a copy of TSB 04-063.
