I've seen the posts on the old V popping and clunking and having it be a stabilizer bar thing, but I think I have something different. My wife called me this morning on her way to work. She was worried that a cat had crawled under the hood on this coldest morning of the year so far and was bouncing around in the engine bay. She said she started the car and let it idle for a few minutes as she got the baby loaded in, as well as other stuff. Then, after she backed out of the driveway and took off down the street, she said she began to hear a popping or clunking sound that increased in frequency the faster she went. She stopped at a red light, then after she took off again, the noise came back. She then stopped at a gas station and called me.
She was unable to make the V duplicate the noise while I was on the phone with her as she said it didn't occur at idle. When I asked her to give me her best impression of the noise, she said she couldn't. But, she said it sounded like a ball bearing rolling around in the glove compartment. Not that the noise was coming from the glove compartment but that's what the sound seemed like.
I immediately thought cv joint and asked her if the car made the noise while turning. She said that no, it didn't. It was only straight line driving. After stopping at the gas station to talk to me and get the strength to open the hood (fearing there was fricassied feline inside), the noise dissapeared.
Any thoughts? She said it come from the passenger side of the engine compartment. I thought at first it was maybe belt related but what would cause that noise from the belts except for maybe having the belt break? And, I would think that the noise wouldn't increase w/ acceleration if it were belt related.
We've got the automatic transmission and she feared that maybe she'd slapped it from reverse to drive w/o coming to a stop first but I wouldn't think anything like that would just appear then disappear.
Could it be a cold weather thing?
What about RT4WD?
I'm sure I'll spend the evening under the hood when I get home and want to see if there's anything posted about this.
Thanks!!
