View Full Version : Is your driver side mirror flat?

How flat is your driver side outside mirror? I get a swimming feeling everytime I look in mine. I think it's the mirror and not the window glass because I don't see any swimming when I power the window up and down.
I think I noticed the same thing when I rented a car several months ago. But it was an American car and I didn't expect too much from it. But this is MY new CR-V! Is the mirror supposed to be flat or is everyone shipping slightly wavy mirrors now?

mine is flat. No waves at all in either mirror.

My driver side mirror is like that too, but I got used to it after a while

No offense intended, constructive observation only, but have you had your eyes checked recently?

Haha. Yes, I wondered if it was my eyes too. It's a legitimate question. I'm one of the oldies on here who wear's bifocals. But I don't see any waviness on my Accord or my Mazda pickup driver side mirrors. But looking straight at the mirror and moving my head up and down so I'm always through the same part of my glasses, I can see the size of distant objects varying.
I'm trying to find a way to demonstrate the flatness problem to the dealer for when I go in and ask for a replacement.

It almost seems like the mirror has a slight curve on it, sort of like a convex lens

I just posted about this last night. There is definitely a 'fun house mirror' thing going on with the driver's side mirror. I put a round convex mirror on each of my rear views to help with sight-lines, but something is definitely funky with that mirror.

Yeah, that's a good description. The effect I see is like a funhouse mirror.

This seems like a logical explanation.

It seems like this is a manufacturing defect, to me. I can't see any safety benefit to having your driver's side mirror reflect in this very wavy fashion. I hate to take in my car complaining of a 'wavy mirror,' but I may have to.
I'm glad it's not just me getting old. I seem to have the same funhouse effect on the driver's side mirror. So far the service advisor can't see it but he referred the issue to the service manager. I'll be seeing him tomorrow.

So, it's not just me?!?
My driver's side mirror is relatively flat, except for about the last inch on the right side of the lens, starting about an inch from the top, all the way to the bottom. It really messes with my mind, when trying to back the CR-V between two posts.

Same for my 2007 CRV, fun house mirror effect says it all. I thought it was me. Valley Honda looked at it and said they did not see it. I will be bringing it back with this post printed out. THANKS

I was trying to figure out a way to show the dealer that the mirror was not flat. When looking at the mirror up close, I would be hard pressed to say there was anything wrong with it. But I think what does work is looking at two parallel lines in the distance. I noticed this when there were some overhead power lines in my mirror. Move your head up and down so you are looking at the lines through different parts of the mirror. You'll see the distance between the lines varying. A lot more obvious than looking at trees or other cars. Using this method, I also discovered that there is more waviness on the outside edge of the mirror than the center.

Call Honda 800 999 1009
Use case number N012007-02-1400040
Make sure you have your VIN, I did not.

And what are we supposed to be telling Honda?

Tell them your drivers side mirror is distorted and you want it fixed. Most of us thought it was just our own issue, I did, until I read this post.
I told them more than one person is having this problem. The lady at Honda said have them call on this ticket so Honda could track the issue and potentially create a maintenance ticket on it because it might be a safety issue, which it truly is.
It might also help to get the dealers to actually fix the problem and not just say it looks fine to them.

Awesome. I just soft of learned to live with it. I'm setting up for having my third warranty repair done. Might as well add a fourth.
