View Full Version : Overdrive Function on the CRV

Hello people, I had read in one of the reviews that the new CRV has an overdrive key on its gears. would any one know what is it for ? To those of you, who already have the new CRV doe it increase the speed & power of the car at high speed...? Do let me know. Thanks !

No, it won't give you more power or speed on the highway.

An overdrive is simply an additional gear that reduces the engine's rpm while cruising on the highway. You use less gas. It also reduces the torque transmitted to the wheels so I believe it's recommended that it only be turned off when under heavy loads, like towing.

Turning OD on and off would be like comparing an old 4 speed manual, where the 4th gear ratio is 1:1, to a 5 speed where 4th is still 1:1 but 5th is 0.75:1. Traditionally, OD does nothing to the behavior of the other gears. In a modern, electronically controlled transmission however, OD may also do some other things like adjusting the shift logic, maybe.

wildswing is right.

The OD on the V's is simply an ultra-high road gear that helps to give better MPG. Calling it OD justs sounds good to the marketing folk.

ya.. i wish i had overdrive... my 97 only has a torque converter which is only good for about a 200-300rpm drop at 70mph... :(

Oh but you do! D4 is considered overdrive - on the 99 models it just goes up to D3 and overdrive (D4) is always on unless you push a button. The gen1 AT CRV has a 4 speed transmission with "overdrive" being the 4th gear. When you drop yours down to D3 (or press the button on the 99 and up models) - thats basically running with overdrive off.

Correct me if I'm wrong though - not entirely sure about the 99 and up models.

You are correct. 97-2001 are all the same, tranny-wise.

ok... i stand corrected... dang... without that OD id be driving around at like 5000+ rpms all the time... haha...

i guess im just used to my moms car (1993 toyota Camry)... which has a 4spd auto, then od on top of that... which drops the freeway cruising rpms to like 2000-2200, whereas my V is always like 1000 more than that...

The camry's a V6 too which means it has alot more torque at lower RPMs than the little 4banger B20 so it can run at lower RPMs and keep the car going. Just crank up the tunes :lol:

So when we push the overdrive button and the light goes on for o/d on the dash is the torque converter locking or unlocking?

Neither, you are dropping to third gear. When the torque 'vertor locks up, it makes about a 200rpm difference or so. Press the button and it downshifts, making a much larger rpm difference.

The TCV lockup function operates in any gear at low RPM and load.

actually its got a 2.2 SOHC I4, with similar power numbers to the V... its just way more aerodynamic and less rolling resistance (on the V u let off the gas and it slows down, on her camry it keeps on coasting...lol)
