View Full Version : Rear Brake Noise

Not sure if this is considered normal, but I've never experienced it with other cars. When I back out of my driveway in the morning (or any time after the car has been parked for a while) I notice a grinding sound when I apply the brakes (I'm talking very low speed...backing out into the road and applying the brakes). It's way louder than I'd expect from a new car (I've had it for 2 months or so). I'm not sure if it's coming from one side or both, but it's very noticable. Once I've been driving a bit (usually just a matter of minutes) I don't notice it nearly as much...like when I'm braking for a stop sign.

Are cold brake pads louder...and get quieter once they've warmed up?

I know it doesn't sound like a huge issue...the breaks work great otherwise...but it's kind of driving me nuts.

Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Both mine and my girlfriends 2007 EX-L do this as well. After driving for awhile it goes away so I haven't thought much of it.

Happens to my V also. Only in the morning, when reversing out of my garage. Once I start to move forward, it is fine or reversing when it is warm.

Does this have anything to do with humidity? It happens on all cars when they're washed so I figured that may be an issue.

same issue here, only happens if its been parked for over night, reversing or driving fwd first thing, its seems like a grind, but after a few min. its ok...

This is rust on the disc brakes. This happens on all disc brake cars. The reason the noise goes away is because the pads remove the surface rust when applied. You'll also notice that the brakes are a bit more touchy when you first start out in the morning or after the car has set for several hours. This is nothing to worry about.

Glad I'm not the only on experiencing this! Can brakes really rust overnight?

Faster than overnight, when you wash your car and after it dries you can see the rust.

IT IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.
