View Full Version : 2-level storage area and rear window opinions?

Hello,

I don't own a 2007 CRV, but I was wondering what other's opinions are on the fact that the 2-level rear storage area could be a hazard, if you came to a sudden stop. That would make anything with any weight behind it a projectile. Is there a good reason as to why they would change this feature?

Also, does anyone else think the back window panel look awful? I don't know, but when I see some cars they just look hot or stylish, but the back windows looks odd.

cheers,

Doesn't the upper storage level only hold 20 lbs? And since it sits below the top of the seats I doubt it's a real problem.

Hmmmm...I suppose so, but I heard a story about a lady who stored some luggage in the back seat of her sedan. When she got into an accident the luggage, basically hit her in the back of the head...and she was paralyzed.

So that's why I never put anything like that in the back seat, that may be launched due to a accident or fender bender.

Any thoughts on the rear left and right windows?

cheers,

There are several urban legends floating around about items in the back seat, or on the rear decks of sedans flying around in accidents and killing/maiming/injuring people.

Anytime you're carrying heavy objects in your vehicle you need to secure them so they won't fly around in an accident.

anything that is inside the car can be a projectile in case of an accident, even a pen or a coin. It's the duty of the occupants to secure these items and if possible don't put it in the vehicle. Heavy luggages are not recommended by Honda to be placed on top of the cargo shelf, and if there's a need to carry a huge load of items then maybe those cargo tie-downs could be useful.

I wonder if the height of it is adjustable. Does it allow for the cargo cover to be installed at the lower or the higher level?

Is what adjustable? The Honda 2-level thing? Yes. You have it in the middle or you can lay it flat on the floor.

It's a shame that Honda did not make an "upper" level setting for the cover - something at about the top of the back seat height - for those of us that need the extra storage space below the cover. I really like the hard cover and how easy it is to open and close...nothing mechanical to break. BUT I need more room underneath. I ordered the retractable soft cargo cover ($188 from my Honda Dealer - at their cost). I tried to "even trade" my dealer - the hard cover for the retractable soft cover - but the best they would do is offer me the soft one at cost.

I am selling the hard cover http://www.hondasuv.com/stg/viewtopic.php?t=20337 in gray if anyone is interested. I was told by the Honda parts guy that it will also fit in an LX.

I agree. I had a Chrysler PT Cruiser at one time, and it had a movable rear shelf that could be set at any of three (IIRC) heights, one of which was level with the top of the rear seatback so that it effectively acted as a shield against prying eyes for the cargo area.

Another plus for the the PT Cruiser version was that when it wasn't being used, it stowed vertically against the back of the rear seat. The CR-V's is stowed flat on the floor, which blocks access to the rear tire well. Not a big deal, but...

On the other hand, the CR-V's shelf folds in half, offering some configeration options not possible with the PT Cruiser's solid shelf.

All in all, I'm satisfied with the CR-V's arrangement.

too bad the don't offer legs for the shelf so it can be a picnic table again!

Very true, hasn't anyone ever seen the mythbusters where they tested these things? They even had a bowling ball

Most of the stuff did nothing at all that they placed up there.

I agree that the shelf looks too low in the middle position. I have an '03 and got the soft cover that goes at the top. It is great....gives you lots of room, easy access (including from the back seat) and covers things for privacy. Seems like a much better solution than the hard shelf in the middle.
