I've been considering getting the extended warranty for my new V. I'm conflicted. On one hand, I appreciate the peace of mind and plan on keeping this ride for a long time. On the other hand, as a friend recently told me, "It's a Honda, you'll get 150k miles out of it no matter what."
What do you long-time Honda owners think?
If you do a search for Extended Warranties, you'll see enough posts to keep you reading for a while. Opinions on both sides on the fence.

No.
At least I don't think they are worth it.

My 1999 Accord has 94,000 miles on it. It hasn't been under warranty for a LOOONG time.
In that service time, it has been to the dealer once (to get the radio unlocked after the battery was changed).
I just did a tune-up (cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, air filter) and the scheduled 90k service. (tranny flush, brake line flush, coolant flush)
It's had 3 sets of tires and 1 set of front brake pads.
Other than that, it's pretty much original.
My dealer threw in the 120k extended warranty as part of a deal-breaker when i bought my 'V'. (I had 2 dealerships bidding against one another for my business). If I had to pay for it, I'd never had considered it. But since it was free, it gives me a bit more peace of mind.
Honda's run darn near forever.

I had it and I USED it on my last Honda - the Pilot! I went ahead and purchased it for the new CRV only because I got it for a decent price and it's for 120,000 miles and $0 deductible. ($900). I guess I was snakebit last time and wanted to have "peace of mind" again this time. I'm sure I won't have to use it-I never did with my first CRV. :D

Companies would not sell extended warranties unless they made money on them.
So, it is a fair bet that on the average they take in a lot more than they pay out.
Think of it like insurance. If you can afford to weather the risk, don't buy it!

If I buy another Honda, I will look seriously at a extended waranty. We have a 02 CR-V that has had extended SRS troubles and a 03 Accord that needed a transmission at 39,000 miles. I don't feel the quality is that much better than domestics. But I still love Honda's!

Unless you are in Florida, you can buy that Honda Care warranty from any dealer and save a considerable amount from what your own dealer may quote you. You can always try to get your local dealer to price-match the on-line dealers too. It may be hundreds of $ less.
A caveat is in order though. ONLY buy the real Honda Care warranty and do not buy a third-party warranty.
Personally, I like it because for the price, it's worth the money since Honda does refund a pro-rated amount if you sell the car after a few years. I used to have AAA but cancelled it after getting Honda Care because it comes with roadside assistance and free car rental if your Honda is in the shop.
Yes, shop around. I bought my 100K zero deductible for my CR-V for $800.

Is the Extended warranty valid only on the dealer where you purchased the vehicle? If it is, IMHO it's not gonna be worth it because who knows where you will be 3-, 5-, or 8-years from now? Or if you're like me who was not contented with the pricing that my local dealers have on the 07 V and went instead outside my 50-mile comfort zone? I know these local dealers compare notes so that'll leave me less room to negotiate a price. So with the distance to the dealer as another issue, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who will have some second thoughts in making the long trip just to have my V's Service A1 taken care of. Study your needs, comfort level and options.

If the extended warranty is from Honda which is HONDA CARE, you can go to any authorized honda dealer in US. You can transfer the left over warranty by paying $50 to the dealer you bought from when you sell the car.
Unless you are in FL, you can buy Honda care from any authorized dealer in US.
SO PLEASE if you decided to buy one, make sure it is HONDA CARE and shop around.

i hope you meant tranny drain and fill. honda dealers would never flush a honda tranny, it will kill it.

I want to know the reason as well. Two people on this topic mentioned something about living in Florida so there must be something I don't know.

Supposedly Florida has a law that states you can only purchase an extended warranty from a local Florida dealer. All other states don't have such a law so the extended warranty can be purchased from an online dealer in another state.

So, how long after vehicle purchase can you add the Honda warranty?

The normal new car warranty is available until you have 6000 miles. After that, you can still get a HondaCare Warranty up to 36000 miles, but it is more expensive and you can't get as long terms.

I just recently picked up my Honda CRV EX-L with Navi. During the closeout I was provided info on extended warranties which was basically 2 companies - one of which was through Honda (hence you could only bring the car to a honda dealer for repair). I never had bought an extented warranted in my life. However with all the electoronic components now in cars (including the Navi) i may opt for the service - i guess the catch phrase here is peace of mind. The cost was around $830 for 7 years (actually 4 if you exclude the 3 you get) or 75000 miles.

Honda Care warranties are available for up to 8 years and 120,000 miles. I just got mine (120k) for $810 at Saccucci Honda in RI. We put around 20k a year on our cars and this was the best value at the time of sale.

When I bought the 04, I purchased a 75k 5 year plan for about $400 since I figured we wouldn't even have it that long and I could use the extra Honda Care warranty as a future sales tool. Now it looks like it is going to a long-term keeper. It really is a great vehicle. (Still, 1st gen's rule!)

Hi All,
Anyone who has the HondaCare warranty with the Motoring club membership, I have a question. Does the membership only cover the Honda vehicle that you bought the HondaCare warranty for or is the membership for the owner of the car and can it be used like a AAA or Normal Cross country motoring club membership on any car I drive?
Thanks!

The HondaCare program is for the vehicle listed on the contracts identification page...so yes, your Honda only. It does provide for all mechanical breakdowns for everything except tires and normal wear items (tires have their own warranty). My plan was a 6yr/120k with $0 deductable.

I got the HondaCare 7 year 120K mile, 0 deductable warranty for $709.00. Dealer said that was his cost... maybe true... maybe not... still a good deal:)

Doesn't the extended warranty cover alot less than the original warrany? Seems like the aftermarket warranty that my credit union has covers more.

NO
Just ensure that you are buying the official HONDA CARE warranty.
It continues the original warranty just as if it was a new car with 1 mile on it.
Honda Care is probably one of the best manufacturer warranties available.

Is the Honda Care extended warranty the same as the original three year limited bumper to bumper warranty that you get with a new car? From the limitations page, it looks like it just extends the powertrain warranty. I hope someone can explain this in depth.

Simply google honda care warranty. You will get a bunch of good hits.
Here's a link to one of the Honda dealers that people here have bought their extended warranty from:

Before purchasing, see if your local dealer will price match.

I purchased the extended honda care warranty from www.bernardiparts.com. They included a $30 credit towards any honda parts as well. Saccucci honda have the same prices for the warranties but only gave you $25 credit for honda parts. Either dealers are great.

I just purchased a 2007 CR-V and I read this thread before I went into the dealer to sign the final paperwork. Towards the end of the process the dealer tried to sell me their extended warranty 7yr/100,000 miles for $1400; I said I was not interested and I asked about the Honda Care Warranty and they offered me a price about $400 more than the internet quotes I have seen. When I tried to get the dealer to lower the price on the Honda Care Warranty they started telling me about how other internet dealers aren't required to be bonded in Maryland. He said this meant that if the dealer went bankrupt that no one would honor the warranty.
What I understand from this thread is that a Honda Care Warranty is backed by Honda, not the dealer who sold it, so I should be safe buying a Honda Care Warranty online from a merchant like Bernardi. Am I right???

Bonded? That's a new one. How many Honda dealers have ever gone bankrupt?
Honda Care warranties are sold by the dealer, for Honda. Honda backs it.

Agreed. It's not like when you buy a TV and you're sold a third party insurance company warranty. This is a warranty that comes from the same entity that offers you the first three year warranty, which is Honda itself. Be glad you don't live in FL - I paid $1200 for my 6yr/100,000.

You know, I can understand deception while negotiating, but this strikes me as downright deceit--the dealer was misrepresenting the Honda Care Warranty as not being directly backed and honored by Honda.
Dealers often try and de-couple the satisfaction survey from the negotiation process of buying a car, which is rubbish. I'd suggest calling the salesperson and let him or her know that you've discovered that what they implied was a misrepresentation of the Honda warranty, and that your frustration will be represented in your satisfaction survey results and also by a complaint directly to Honda.
They might apologize and offer you something to help make up for the dishonesty.

I feel sure if you bought a Honda Care Warranty, even from internet, any Honda dealer would have to honor it. Since I've never purchased a warranty on internet,to be on the safe side, I'd call Honda Care direct and ask them.

Any Honda dealer will honor it as long as it's Honda Care.
To me, it's worth the investment if you plan on having your car for years and you plan on putting a lot of miles on your car in a short amount of time. I had an 03' Accord and less than 3 years after I had the car, I had 39K on it and the ABS system and wheel mounts went. All I did was call the dealer and they came and towed the car from my house, gave me a rental and returned the care back to my house when they were done with it. With the $$ amount that the job would have costed me out of pocket (along with all the times I misjudged how much gas I had or how many flats I had and called Honda Care....) it totally paid for itself. I got it on my CR-V (I think it's up to 120K, have to look at my paperwork....) because I can see myself getting into that same situation and not being prepared.
Your insurance company may offer you something similar, but compare the 2 of them very carefully - Honda's is pretty-much bumper to bumper, and the auto insurance's appears to extend only powertrain and often not only carries a deductible but the repairs often require "approval" before the work is completed.
Trust me, I know. :)
I don't remember what I paid for it though....
